Subject: Rack and Pinion "Clunking" IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 c.c. 4x4. When I turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly, with the engine off, there is a clunking or knocking sound coming from inside the rack and pinion. I can also hear it inside the cab and feel it in the steering wheel.
So, my question is, is this normal? Or is there something wrong with the rack and pinion?

Message: I agree, sounds like ball joints. WHat you think is the rack is actually the spindles shifting on the ball joints. This is a common problem with daks and rams, when you get them replaced, use a quality aftermarket part, not one from Mopar. The ball joints from Mopar are all junk. Mine are getting pretty bad on my 2000 4x4 at 45000 miles, which I understand is a pretty good run for these trucks.
Have a quality suspension shop put in new ball joints, unless you are still under warranty, then take it back to the dealer.

Message: mmm...sounds just like mine, but i also notice it
the same things except mine is making the clicking
sound as i am driving and when braking. I hear and
feel the clicking the most upon initial
acceleration or when coming to a stop!!!! The
only other thing that is differnt is that my
stering wheel doesn't seem to "lock" when you turn
off the ignition....you know when you turn the
wheel?? it doesn't lock into place!!! is this
the same thing???

Message: I have terrible clunking noises in my front end. Already had the steering shaft replaced at 2000 miles on my 2001 dakota quad cab 4x4. It is doing it again. So is it my ball joints, or the steering shaft again?

Message: Hey guys, well just lifted the truck up today and
decided to check those wonderful ball joints we
have, and guess what??? at only 23,000 miles i
have an uppoer passenger side ball joint
failure!!! so that is probably the cause of my
clunking in the front end, i just hope the rancho
5000 shocks weren't the cause of premature ball
joint failure!??!?

Message: Well, in reference to the original message, I'm afraid this does appear to be normal on 4x4 vehicles. My 2001 Dak QC 4x4 4.7/auto (7k miles) has a rattle in the front end/steering, and I also noticed the front-end play play and thought it might be the cause. The dealer said 'normal on 4x4's'. I was naturally skeptical, but they took an identical brand-new vehicle off of the lot and put it on a lift next to mine, and it was... identical.
For anyone who wants to duplicate, if you have a 4x4 with the rack and pinion steering, have a helper turn the the steering wheel rapidly back and forth (engine off) and hold the tie rod. You will feel the play. It is NOT the ball joints.

Message: QCOwner, I know this is an old thread, but has anyone found a fix? I find this "normal" issue to be unacceptable. My 2001 CC 4x4 goes in tomorrow for another issue. I also have a friend that has a 2001 CC just like mine. Just drove on a rough gravel road and now his has the rattle.... read my thread:

Message: I just got a new 2002 Quad 4x4 4.7 automatic. I have the same problem. I have noticed a loud "clunk" sound when I brake and steer hard some times(even at very slow speeds). I only have 3000 miles and the dealer says that they can't duplicate the problem and that the steering, alignment, and brake systems are functioning within the service guide tolerences. I guess I will just have to keep complaining because this is not acceptable to me either. I am atleast happy that someone else has noticed the same problems with the 4x4's. "Misery loves company"....

Message: Has anyone checked the play on their front axle were it goes into the front diff housing. Mine makes a racket every time I go over a bump. I found it myself by pushing up on it. My dealer could not find the problem but after a phone call told me the axle should not do this. they want it back in to check it out. Drivers side has almost 1/4 inch movement. I'll keep you all posted.

Message: My friend had the same problem. First they repacled the intermidate shaft in the steering column and the upper control arms. It seemed to get rid of the problem for a while. It re-occured later on and they replaced the lower control arms. NOW finally after replacing everything in sight, he has no problems. Thank God for warranties.

Message: Hicap, What did the dealer say or do about the axle? After reading your post, I found my driverside CV Axle does the same thing. If I nudge it hard enough it makes the rattle sound I'm hearing in the cab. I hope there's a permanent fix.

Message: i was in opelousas with a couple of cousins of mine making last respects to an aunto of ours. we live in temple texas which is about a 400 mile difference. my rack and pinion went out. i had to rent a vehicle and drive back. now i will have to rent again to pick it up when it is done. i am told that it will take 3 to 5 working days before they can get it. i was wonderring if there is any kind of recall on the rack and pinion for a 2002 dodge ram pickup. it is just a regular 2-wheel drive. also, shouldn't they pay for my rental?
