Message: I have a 2001 dakota with a 3 speed automatic tranny with overdrive. It shifts fine into reverse and from first to second, but when it tries to too shift to thrid it starts slipping. I let of the gas and it will grab thrid but when I get back on the gas it will slip again. The truck has about 70,000 miles on it with 4.7 litter V8. Anybody know what would cause this? Is it a sensor? Or does the fluid and filter need changed? Thanks!!

Message: I have an 03 Dakota clubcab 3.9 with a 4sp/auto 42RE transmission. When I shift into reverse there is a definite audible 'thunk' Some people have asked me if I tap the horn everytime I shift into reverse. The dealer had it for a week and took it apart, replaced numerous parts and it still does the same thing. Anyhone else have this annoying problem?
Also had a problem with shifting down (either not shifting down or shifting down twice and putting you in the back seat) while in cruise going up hills. Dealer installed an extra vacuum cannister dedicated to the cc. It works somewhat better, but not like I think it should.

Message: The magical "reverse horn" sounds like metal against metal. Possibly the rear U Joint. My '99 4x2 has done it since the day i bought it. Think of it as a warning device.

Message: Might be wrong fluid. Have learned to use Mopar fluid only, and Mopar filter. No additives of any sort. Cheapest way to check without having repairs done is fluid/filter change. Hope that helps. ( Had similar problem with Caravan )

Message: My Dakota (98 SPORT 6 cyl 136,000 miles) developed a problem last sunday. After a 45 mile ride, I slowed down to 25mph and it bucked and jerked and stalled out. It restarted, (engine check light on) went a mile, did it again. Mechanic 1 (Dodge garage) said clean the fuel injector. Autozone (free compscan for the trouble code) said speed sensor. Mech 2 said a speed sensor wouldn't do that. Mech 3 said it might do it. Mech 4 (Ford garage) said had to be universals. Mech 5 (Dodge garage) said speed sensor would do it. (I wanted a few opinions before I replaced the thing). Anyway I replaced it, took 5 mins, (very easy but get ready to catch 2 qts of fluid), and it seemd to clearup the problem, also it doesnt lag from 1st to 2nd gear like it used to. Now, I have a squeak squeak squeak as i go from 0 to 5mph then it dissapears..but driveshaft is good..no one can figure that one out.

Message: Hey, I drive a 97 5.2 4x4, I sometime get the slipping problem as well when in 1st to 2nd. I have to let off the gas as it will not let me get any more speed. Once let off and hit the throttle again it is fine. Took it to the shop and of course it would not do it. Only happens periodicly but still there. I have gotten no answer on what it is.

Message: I found the problem with my 2001 dakota. It has a 45rfe tranny and 4.7 v8. There is a plate on the side of the valve body called a accumulator plate that holds the accumulator pistons in, after time the bolts backed loose and caused the plate to bend. Which caused me to loose 3rd and 4th gear. I bought a new plate which was about $80 and bolts. I also got some locktite (blue). I dropped the tranny pan and removed the valve body and put the plate and new bolts on. I put blue locktite on the bolts to prevent the bolts from backing off again. I also got the mopar tranny filters and fluid (ATF+4)which was about $80 also. I put it all back together and solved all my problems. Come to find out it is a common problem on those tranny's. The plate I bought was also better made than the original. It took me a few hours to install. So if you have lost 3rd and 4th gear, I would drop the tranny pan and check that plate and bolts. Hope this helps someone out.

Message: I have a 98 dakota slt 88,000 miles and have been experiencing the shifting problem from 3rd-4th gears..now it is spreading to 2nd gear. I noticed a hose hanging from underneath my truck. It was supposed to be connected to a box, underneath truck- driverside- middle of truck. I believe it leaked a black substance all over my driveway and garage. I attempted to reconnect and connection is loose. I think it is a vaccuum of some type but hose connection is not airtight. I also have abs light and parking light on which causes stiff braking.Just changed rotors and pads and mech. said it was because of oversized tires but i dont believe. Please help!

Message: I don't have a clue what the black stuff was > But pretty much has to be oil of some sort to run on driveway > If the connecter isn't busted that the hose goes on just remove the hose and get a new one > No biggy there but you may have another problem to deal with > That's where's the black stuff coming from > If you don't have a manual , you need to get one > About the tires > No mention what big consists of but big can really suck a lot out of your brakes > No doubt there's something wrong or lights would not be on > Go to autozone or some other place in your area that will pull the codes with no charge

Message: That black hose with black stuff connects to your evap canister/emmission control system. As for the abs light, does your speedo at up? It might be your rear wheel sensor.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: Thank for info. The speedometer works fine most of the time but acts up at high speeds and fluctuates up and down. It seems to start acting up at the same time abs and parking brake lights come on. Its wierd. Sometimes works good, then justs goes nuts.

Message: Ok guys, I have been researching this problem for about a year. I have a 2003 R/T regular cab. Let me specify which problem because I am pretty sure some of you have different issues. My problem is that my truck gets stuck in first gear up to the rev limiter at wide open throttle. I took my truck to the dealer and they replaced the sensors inside the transmission pan. Didnt fix it. I replaced the output sensor on the side of the tail of the transmission. Didn't fix it. I bought Hypertech programmer adjusted the rev limiter 500+. Didn't fix it (the engine now winds out to like 5900 and I back off of it before then because it sounds like something is gonna blow). I then replaced the rear speed sensor on the rear housing. Didnt fix it. Now I guess I will try to adjust the TV cable. I have my doubts if this will fix it either. Does anyone have any real solutions to this problem? The dealer already changed fluids and now says "dodge has no fix at this time".

After 96,000 miles, we're finally getting a transmission replaced. Just wondering is this is a defect which should have been taken cared way back then by the dealer.
