Message: Have any of you had the shifting problem bring up a Check Engine idiot light? My 99 has 113K and really has been a great truck. I started to take off one day and experienced what has turned out to be a common problem of hanging between 1st and 2nd. Last week I had the pleasure of it not shifting at all until I pulled on the TV-Cable. I have changed the Fluid and Filter and I plan on replace the speed sensor. Any suggestions other than what I have read above!?

Shifting Problems?

SOME THINGS CHANGE
Today's transmission pretty much serves the same function as before, but now there are more components. In addition to clutch packs, plates, gears, valves, and bearings, we have solenoids and sensors, and a lot more orifices where contaminants can cause blockages that interfere with performance.
One thing that has not changed is that transmission fluid remains a necessary "component" of the transmission. And fluid quality is more important than ever before.
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) not only cools working parts and reduces wear, it also serves as a hydraulic fluid to actuate valves used for shifting. An argument can be made that no other component is as important as your ATF.
WHAT ELSE IS NEW?
The requirements placed on ATF have changed in other ways as well. Because of the aerodynamics in many of today's vehicles, the overall drivetrain is simply not getting cooled off the way it used to. For this reason, transmissions run hotter, so hot in fact that interior carpets have caught fire during some tests where SUVs were pulling heavy loads.
Furthermore, because of the sensors and solenoids, fluid cleanliness has become an absolute requirement. Debris and gunk in the transmission fluid will cause interference and literally do damage in ways that less sophisticated transmissions never experienced before.
The biggest change in today's transmissions comes from the fact that the shifting is no longer driven by mechanical action, but rather is controlled by electromechanical hydraulic solenoids (valves).
The result is that the smallest amount of debris can clog or restrict solenoids causing them to not work properly or even burn out.
In the past it was the clutches themselves that physically wore out, but now the tranny can fail prematurely while everything else is fine because clutches aren't getting the correct pressure to keep from slipping. Or even worse, the computer brain signals instructions for two competing gears to engage at the same time. For this reason you need a high quality Synthetic ATF that has a better additive package to hold material in suspension. And by reducing friction this synthetic fluid reduces wear so that less wear material is left floating around in there.
THE SYNTHETIC SOLUTION
As with the engine, so with the transmission ... Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluids offer superior protection, as well as cleaner and cooler operation. The heat issue cited above is a very real problem. Synthetics reduce friction and keep transmissions cooler.
With regard to cleanliness, synthetic fluids are less vulnerable to oxidation and breakdown. They keep orifices clean, and the tranny experiences smoother operation.
CLOSING THOUGHT
A Premium Synthetic ATF will go double the lifespan of conventional transmission fluids, and will make a huge difference in the performance of your vehicles.
This is an often neglected area where it really pays to get educated. Most motorists do not realize how vital these drivetrain fluids are for keeping their vehicles on the road. Especially SUVs and light trucks that are used to haul heavy loads or pull heavy trailers.
As in most areas of life we either pay now or pay later. Purchasing Synthetic ATF is a small price to pay when you can gain 100,000 extra miles at the other end of the service life of your car or light truck.
All that I ask is that you Consider Amsoil Synthetic ATF for all of your automatic transmission.

Message: Dakota 2001. My automatic transmission will not start out in drive. Although the computer is telling the trans that I am in Drive it starts off in 2nd. If I rev the engine it will jump into drive. I have started shifting the auto like a manual. I start off already in 2nd and move the lever to drive myself. This seems to work but what a pain. Am I creating a bigger problem in the future. It's been checked out but only by the computer. I didn't want to dish out several hundred to drop the valve cover to tell me that it's not there and have to try something else.

Does anyone know exactly where this sensor is and what it looks like? I wan't to change my filter and fluid as my trans shifts like crap.

Message: 94 dakota 5.2 2x4 175,000 K
Noticed it was not shifting into od as easy as it was before, needed to be driven for a while. Learned from your forum this is a common problem, and the computer will not shift into od unill it warms up. I also noticed that some of you had luck just flushing the tranny and changing filters. Took the truck to a tranny shop for a service and once the the pan was dropped they had to show me what they condsidered excessive metal filings at the drain plug. I got the truck used at 130 K and i know the pan was never taken off so I thought that did not look unreasonable for that many miles. When i wiped around the plug, it was not of any metal filing consistancey but magnatized sludge. How much is a lot? They told me that the computer was telling the tranny to go into od but it would not work and that i needed a rebuild at $3000 can. I asked them just to flush it/change filter and put it back together. Well, it runs much better and shifts really well so im taking advice from this forum and from now on, any vehicle is going to get a new filter and tranny flush once a year.
Would a dirty filter reduce the pump pressure and restrict the od.
Thanks

Message: I have a similar problem with my 99 dakota "hanging" I took it to a transmission specailist and discovered that there is a "defect" if you will, in the tranny. There is a rubber seal that sits in a machined part of the transmission, apparently dodge didnt machine it deep enough to hold the seal over time. There is a kit out there to fix the problem. The kit includes a better seal and a shift improvment kit. Complete job ran me about $1,100.00

Message: Cheap fix for shifting problems: TransX. Dump a bottle in every 6 mos & its a miracle cure. A guy who specializes in Mopar tranny repair recommeded it to me. He claims dodge is notorious for dried out seals in the tranny. I'm not a believer in all these supposed cure-all fluids, but this really did work. A couple guys I work with were having the same problem with their trucks & it worked for them too. For just couple bucks, its worth a try before you shell out $1,000+ for a rebuild. My tranny is still going strong 2 years later. (First Tranny guy I talked to said it was ready to crap & scheduled me for a rebuild.)

Message: I just experienced similar problems to almost all of you with my 99 r/t tranny. That mil suddenly came on and no shifts from 1 to 2 and no shifts from 3 to od. Anyway ends up just a bunch of junk on my output speed sensor on the tranny. Simple fix the sensor is WHITE w/ 2 wires coming out of it on the lower left of the tranny, simply take a 1 inch wrench and remove and clean the junk off the tip and reinstall. DONE problem cured

Message: The sensor is on the driver side lower about midway down the tranny. when u remove it youll need a 1 inch wrench or cresent wrench and only a few drops of fluid will come out because its angled and above the fluid level when truck is turned off.
