DaimlerChrysler Recalls 216,100 Dodge Pickups
Tuesday, July 31, 2001
WASHINGTON — DaimlerChrysler Corp. is recalling about 216,100 Dodge pickups because a problem in the steering wheel could disable the driver's side air bag.
The recall, included in the government's monthly list of automotive recalls on Tuesday, involves 1997-2000 models of the Dakota and Durango and the 1997-2001 models of the Ram.
In some of the pickups, the sound deadening material in the steering wheel can detach and create an open electrical circuit. That would disable the air bag and cause the air bag warning lamp to illuminate on the instrument panel.
DaimlerChrysler said it began notifying owners of the recall in June. Dealers will repair the problem for free, as they are required to do in all recalls monitored by the government.

Message: I received the notice for the recall about a month or two ago. Of course it was right after it actually happened to me. I have a 2000 dak quad cab. You'll just turn the steering wheel, hear a crinkling noise, your airbag light will come on, your cruise control and steering wheel radio remote will lose functionality. You can still drive but without the airbag and the other features attached to your steering wheel.
The only other recall I've noticed was one for the seatbelt not being bolted down tightly.
I also took my rig in for a grinding front end noise. Ended up being a tsb on it for front hub assemblies.
Good luck!

I haven't received a recall. i noticed someone mentioned the remote radio controls. I don't have that. Is it only for that electrical setup?
Thanks!

Message: Well here is my two cents on the airbags.
I t-boned a honda a few months ago with my 97 dakota and lucky for me the airbags worked. The first generation airbags both deployed with a lot of force mind you, enough to break the front windshield on the pax side and the driver airbag really hurt my chin and chest. I though I was okay at the scene except for chest pain, yet I am still having back problems three months later. My injuries would have been worse without the airbag I believe. I got the recall notice just after my accident. (along with the 60,000 km tune up slip)
Get those airbags fixed before you really need them.

Message: I had and the key word is had a 2000 dakota. My hubby and rear ended someone the other day. We were going 45 mph, when we hit the brakes and slammed into the back of a chevy 1500. most of the damage was on the drivers side. Our air bags never came out. I called dodge and was told that we should have hit him head on for them to work. O and since we were braking thats what kept them from deploying. please don't think that they are going to save you.I'm just glad that it wasnt worse than it was.

Message: Hello.
I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab and two days ago my air bag light started to come on for no reason. Is this something that is covered under a recall still??
I bought the truck brand new and I have never received a recall notice for this problem.
Thanks,
Howard

Message: I am looking for details on disabling the driver's side airbag on a 1999 Ram 1500 Quadcab.
I do not have foglights so is grounding the parking brake sensor wire actually going to disable it?
I am terrified at the thought of having it deploy & busting both my total hip replacements along with facial injury as I have a partial jaw. I'll take my chances!
Raf
PS: Don't write me to say don't do it. I am already busted up. I don't want to go through the hell of healing or learning to walk again!!

Message: Ummmm...How would the airbag break you hips?? Pretty sure it hits you in the face not in the pelvis...
I can understand the jaw thing, but not the hips??? I know several people who have been in accidents and been hit by the airbag and they didn't break anything, especially not their hips!

Message: I was involved in a head on collision last saturday in my 2000 Dodge Dakota club cab sport. The air bags did not deploy. I was not at fault for the accident, another driver ran a red light as I was attempting to turn left on a green arrow. My head was whipped around violently, as I didn't see the car coming, and the driver of the car, car being a 1999 Ford Mustang, never hit the brakes, going approx. 50 mph. I am only adding this here as this is the first I have ever heard about a recall for the Dodge Dakota on it's airbags. Airbags are, in my opinion, a very necessary part of keeping you from receiving serious injuries in just such collisions. What I don't understand is, why didn't I receive a recall notice? I walked away from the accident, for that I am thankful, but I wouldn't have these injuries to my neck and upper back right now, or much lessened version of them, if the airbag had deployed. Finding this thread is something akin to a Godsend, because there IS a problem, apparently, with the airbag, it is a manufacturer's defect, and that entitles me to damages.

Message: Hi my friend is in a wheelchair he owns a 2002 dodge dakota. He was pulling a trailer to heavy for his truck to handle. Long story short at approximately 40 to 45 miles per hr the trailer pushed us head on into the guardrail. And when it was all over the truck was facing the opposite way from where it started, pinned between the guardrail and the trailer. The airbags didnt deploy. The front end was the worst the bumper on both sides were bent completely under and up into the fenderwells, both sides of the truck are banged up passenger side coming in second for the worst damage and the rear end was suprisingly damaged the least. There isnt one light left on the truck front or rear. And I guess still being in shock I have to say again (THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY). I could be wrong but regardless of who is at fault or whether or not anyone else was involved Isnt the Chrysler corp responsible for the defective airbags? I am just thankful that by the grace of god noone was hurt and the only loss was one truck and one trailer. But I would like to know why there was never any recall notice sent. My friend being paralyzed is extremely lucky to have not been hurt. He is more fragile than others simply because he has already had his back broke. his truck was just hitting the 60,000 mile tune-up time. From what I have read so far I guess noone gets the recall notice until after that? I sure would like to know why!!! If anyone has any words of wisdom on how to go about taking action against the company please, I could really use the help. He only had a liability operators policy. And They only cover damage to someone else he is S.O.L.

Message: I have a 2001 Dakota Quad cab 4x4, I just had the last recall done for my gearshift blocker last week, when I was at the dealer I questioned the recall on the clock spring since I had never received that notice, he checked my VIN# and told me that my truck was not covered under the recall and that the part was $86.00 plus labor to install it. My airbag light started coming on intermittently mostly during turns and has been on continuous now for the past month, and of course the horn does not work. I did find the instructions under safety recall #982 and will end up saving myself a few hundred dollars by doing it myself.
