Message: ive got the 98 Dak Club Cab 4x4, with the 3.9L v6 & 5 spd, I tow a boat/Trailer that weighs in at about 2700lb, it struggles !!. (only 48,000 easy Km on it, so its not a tired vehicle)

Message: I have 1998 Dakota 4WD Extra Cab V8 318 3.92 67,000 miles. It is rated to tow 6,300 lbs. I tow a 5,000 lb boat.
The rear went bad when I towed from NJ to NC 500 miles at 75 mph. Dodge rebuilt rear and the next time I towed from NJ to NC (1 year later) it is going again! (whinning sound). Do I dare rebuild it again? Do I get a custom one made by DYNATRAC?
What options do I have? Any suggestions!

Message: Is the 9.25 what would you get when your options sticker in glove box says "Axle - Rear Coperate 9"? Could the 9.25 only come with the towing package? I got towing package because I knew I would be doing a lot of high way driving and towing later on and wanted that extra bit of toughness.
IMO, the V6 barely halls itself. And my 2000 QC 4.7L V8 gets better milage, city and highway, than my cousins 1999 standard cab V6 and I got a whole lot more power. I test drove the V6, the 4.7 and the 5.9 before buying mine. The V6 was a dog. The 4.7 only has 10 HP less than the 5.9, though the 5.9 does has quite a bit more torque. In just driving, no towing, I thought the 4.7 was just as strong as the 5.9 and was a little quicker rev up.
I don't tow alot...yet...though I am driving the wheels off the thing. Almost 50K miles on it now, less than 2 years old, and hasn't been to the shop for anything mechanical yet. Although I am starting to hear an odd sort of whining sound coming what seems to be the rear end, but only durning sharp turns at very low speeds like in a parking lot. At first I thought it was tires rubbing (on my second set, got big fat P275/60's) but there is no sign of rubbing. I also think it could be my rear drum brakes since I haven't had them serviced yet.
OTOH, my cousin had the rear end in his replaced twice and the trany replaced once before it had 15,000 miles on it.

Message: Bawango24, You deserve to have this problem if you are dumb enough to tow 5000lbs at 75mph. Trucks are not meant to tow that much at high speeds.

Message: The Dana built 8 1/4" & 9 1/4" rear has been giving Chrysler some warranty issues from what I've read, so much so that they have switched to a different axle manufacturer for the full size Ram. (American Axles?) They appear to be just as, if not stronger than those they replace. I have a 9 1/4" in my Dakota and have not had any troubles after 16K miles. From day one though, I did replace the fluid with Richmond Gear 75W-140 synthetic as per the owners manual. I would recommend that everyone do this, more so as a preventative measure than anything. It's easy and cheap, so why not? Although not required by the gear oil I used, I still added a bottle of Chrysler limited slip additive. Good luck everyone.

Message: Hi, Believe it or not but I also have 67,000 miles, '99 Dakota 2WD, 5 speed, 3.92 limited slip, 5.2 magnum. I towed a 2000 pound trailer about 450 miles at around 75 mph and now I have a whining noise from the rear. Not sure what rear I have but I find it hard to believe that it's not strong enough to handle this. Any commments appreciated.

Message: I brought the truck to a shop. $339 later they replaced the pinion bearings. The cages on the tapered roller bearings were broken! I had them use synthetic oil with LS additive. Seems fine now but I'm still worried about towing. I have the 9.25 rear with 3.92 gears and limited slip.
Did Dodge ever use a dana 44 in Dakotas?

Message: wonder if they do something different on the diff with the towing package. I have it and i've pulled my ~2000 lb boat all over the Ozarks (lots of big hills, not like the Rockey's but still quite a mountain) and I've never had to have it serviced and I have the stock lube

Message: damn u guys got problems..my 93 2wd 8.25 rear with 3.55's tows without a problem....hauled a truckbed full of wood and 2 snowmobiles and never had a problem..kept the OD off and we drove fine...i do run synthetic in the gears and tranny though..almost 200k original miles and my Bro-in-law still borrows MY truck to tow his 20foot camper instead of his 4.0liter ranger 4x4

I saw a TSB from Dodge that said to use Synthetic 75w140 in their 1500 series Diffs and I have seen a couple posts from people saying that they changed the rear fluid to synthetic almost right after buying them, So does dodge put synthetic fluid in the rear from the factory or not?

Message: From my experience with my truck, it does not come from the factory with synthetic. Yea, that is a bit dumb, but it does save them a few dollars per truck and that is what matters.
Their point of view would be that even when people order the trailer towing package, most do not pull trailers very often, so why waste synthetic on those trucks.
