Message: 1997 Sport, 71,000 miles, 2.5 Litre, 5 speed.
If running at highway speeds in 5th gear for 1/2 an hour or so, when I slow down and down shift, the engine loses power and acts as if it is running out of gas. Lots of bucking.
If I take it out of gear and jump on the gas, the engine seems to come back to life. I've ruled out bad gas. Any suggestions, including what it might cost to get fixed? I'm not handy, so I'll need to bring it to the dealership. Thanks.

Message: We changed the plugs and ran 2 cans of injector cleaner. It's still acting up. What can you tell me about fuel filters/screens on the '97 4 cylinder? I think there may be some sediment in the tank. It got real bad about 3 minutes after putting 10 gals of gas in the tank.

Message: Be careful with that injector cleaner! Too much/often is not good for your truck. It should not be used more than every 3-4 months. It also builds up on your plugs.

Message: Dealership changed wires and distributor cap and truck ran fine. I fueled up this morning and within 2 minutes, the problem came back. Is there a reasonably priced way to inspect the fuel flow from the tank to the engine? It seems I may have some in the tank that gets stirred up after fueling. Any suggestions?

Message: run the tank almost dry then drop it from the truck. Then go and drain the remaining gas into a jug of some kind. Then put in about a quart of fuel injection cleaner or carb cleaner. swish it around real good. drain tank completely. remove sock from intake in fuel tank and clean it too. replace sock replace tank and hook up all lines refuel. should take care of problem if you have a tank full of gook.

Message: I have the same problem with my 97 V6. Filled up with $10.00 yesterday and then the coughing started 15 minutes later. It runs fine for the first 15 minutes ant then will act up every other 4 minutes. The check engine light came on with error codes 12 & 21. I have not changed the fuel filter in 67,000 miles. Will change it tomorrow to see if it fixes the problem. I had a second 97 V6 that had the same problem perodically up until I traded it in. Is it something with the fuel???

Message: Try cleaning the throttle position sensor and the AIS motor in the throttle body with some good throttle body cleaner. May have to remove them to to really clean them. When they get nasty enough it can cause probs. like this and also may try to choke off when coming to a stop.

Message: Does this happen more when the gas tank is low, and just after a fillup ?
If so, you may have water in your gas tank.
Water is heavier than gas, and therefore sits on the bottom of the tank. When the tank runs low, you start sucking more water.
When you add new fuel, the water mixes with the fuel, and you suck a combination of water and fuel.
Put a can of HEET (gas line antifreeze)in the tank to remove the water.
You may have got some bad gas, or you can get water from condensation if your gas cap is bad.
If you have fuel injection, use the RED HEET bottle, or the isopropyl based product.
The yellow bottle causes the water to form into small globs of gel. While that is fine for carbs, it can sometimes plug injectors.
I would try using 1 can of heet in the next few tanks of gas, and see if that clears up the problem.

Message: My truck ('97 2.5L) does the same thing. First time ,the dealer updated the PCM. Fixed it for a while. A week ago, the coil was replaced. Now it won't start again, so I'm going for another PCM.

Message: I fixed the problem temporarily by pulling the map sensor off, starting it up, and then turning it off, plugging the sensor back in and clearing the codes from the computer. That was a week before the coil was changed, and only lasted for a few days. The problem is not with the fuel, but with how the PCM mixes it and applies spark.

Message: Guys I know this is an old thread- but I had the same problem with my truck ('97 Sport 4 cly) and I got a code 21 as well as the whole running rough deal- I did the tune up thing, no real difference.
Turned out it was my front o2 sensor. I would never have guessed unless I had someone plug their computer into my truck.
