Message: If it's in your exhaust system, it could be just about anything. The best wasy to figure out exactly what it is would be to put the vehicle up on a lift, jackstands, or ramps. Then with someone in the vehicle revving the engine, crawl around underneath listneing and looking. You should be able to isolate the problem right away. I would recommend using a drive-on lift or ramps to keep the suspension in its normal position, just in case there is any interference with suspension parts that's causing the rattle.

Message: I'm on my third catalytic converter, and it was usually an intermittent rattle that tipped me off. It should be covered under the emissions warranty, depending on your mileage, in which case they will replace it free.

Message: I'm also on my third catalytic converter! I have a 2.5L 98, with 30,000 miles. The 1st one that was changed was making an awful rattle sound. The second one did not make the rattling noise...loss of accleration and power especially in first and second gear with a "hissing" noise. Dealer said the cat. conv. clogged up. Please e-mail me if you had similar problem. Dealer said "this is a problem with the Dakotas".

Message: SAME ISSUE HERE! Interesting to hear I'm not alone. I am going to have it checked on a lift as well. I thought maybe it was my tonneau, so when it gets warm, I'm gonna take it off and run it. I hope it's an exhaust rattle.

Message: FIXED MINE!!! The U-clamp used to hold the tail pipe(just behind the cat) from the factory sucked, and the pipe could vibrate and move up to 1/8" front - back!!!!!! Took it to my muffler shop, and they fixed it for the cost of their lunch! Ha ha! So lando981, crawel under and just look around. I checked my heat shields, connections, driveshaft, etc., but it ended up just a U - clamp.

Message: Try this one for size. I bought a 2000 Dakota Club Cab/ 4.7 / 4x4. From day 1 I have had a rattle. Light bumps sets it off. If I am under light braking it gets worse at slower speeds (like pulling up to a bumpy intersection). I have had it to the dealer several times. They changed the front shocks (no help). 41,000 miles and still rattles? I give up. Its for sale now.

Message: I found my rattle was also a U clamp on the muffler missed the pipe, similar to kawzx7. I don't think the quality control on the exhaust system is very good.

Message: Not only does the quality control suck, but if so many of us are changing catalytic convs. so often, so does the engineering. However, my state does not do emissions control testing anymore. So soon I will no longer be having cat. conv, problems! ;}

Message: if your cat is ratterling it could possable be the insides of that cat that has broke here a little tip to get it quiet again if u bang the cat and see which end of that cat is making the noise drill a very small hole taking car not to go to deep then getting a bit of wire to poke in side and find out how deep the cat is in side then cut a slef tapping screww about 1mm longer so that when u screw it in it pushed the cat up and holds it in place there for stopping the rattle its works we do it over here all the time its due to bad roads and driving hard but try it what ya got to lose ?

Message: I have a 99 r/t with 40,000 miles. My cat started rattling about a week ago. I cut my exhaust pipe behind the cat as close as I could to the cat the insides were busted into pieces cranked the truck and blew out most of the insides then took a large screw driver and busted the remaining larger pieces and blew them out. I replaced the pipe to the muffler with a piece of 3" stainless welded the bung back in for the 02 sensor and I have a 2 chamber flowmaster with two stainless turndowns. It sounds better than ever. It will sound even better when i install headers and y-pipe.

Message: I too had the rattle Icalled my dealer he said its not under warranty. I check my book and found out it was and went back and showed him he told me Chrysler wouldn,t reimburse them unless I had a code show up on my dash first I figured that was bull and went to a dealer 30 miles away and just told them I had a rattling converter. They said yes and that it was under warranty they replaced it and I was on my way in about 1 hour with no charge and no questions. how about that

Message: Is this Mac guy, above, still around by chance? Holy moly I have the exact rattle coming from somewhere under the dashboard/driver's side. It happens intermittently over certain bumps, and gets worse as I slow down, coasting or breaking. It's not the exhaust, and doesn't seem to be the suspension. I think it's something from the interior and it's driving me nuts. I've had most of the dash apart looking for something, but have found nothing. I even drove around with almost nothing but my gauge cluster attached to help pinpoint the noise, and nothing. I'm ready to toss a match into the gas tank.
