I just purchased 98 dak 3.9 2wd and heard there might have been recall on cat. converter? On the highway I got 18 mpg so I figured something isn't right.(5sp, no air) Any help would be appreciated, it seems to run strong but mpg sucks.(40,000 K miles)

they probably won't replace it unless it rattles or something...mine rattled after about 44K miles on it, i was inder the 8 year 80000 mile warrenty, so dodge replaced it for free($500+ part)..been fine ever since..i did notice a decent gain in power(butt dyno), but not much change in mpg...as for the recall check out www.alldata.com Hope that helps.

I have been through 5 catalytic converters on my 98 V6 5-speed, the reason why they go out on the v6's is because the are too close to the rear of the tranny. If I recall right on the v8's they are a little farther back.

I have a 1998 Dakota Sport, 3.9 V6, 5 Spd. At 9,000 miles (6 mos. old)the converter started rattling so the dealer replaced it. At about 44,000 miles (18 mos. old) the same thing happened again. Now I'm at 57,000 miles (38 mos. old) and it's clunking AGAIN. I have an appointment to have it checked. Mechanics (other than Dodge dealer types)I have talked to say that by the color of the tail pipe and the fact that it continues to go bad it sounds like the engine fuel system is set too rich and causing the insides of the converter to disintegrate over time. This is getting ridiculous. Any ideas??? Dave

BTW...the last Dodge dealer mechanic who replaced it told me I was using CHEAP gas so I started using AMOCO and I still have the problem. I have a 94 Vette with 52,000 miles on it and it still has the original cats and I've used the same/other gas as in the Dakota for the last five years. I guess that shoots down the cheap gas excuse!!

I have 99 Dakota. After I bought it used in April of 2001 I noticed a rattling noise from the catalitic cover. I went to the dealer and it was still under warrenty at 38k. The dealer replaced it for free. No noise from it since.

I have 2 1997 Dodge Dakota Club cab sports and on one the Cat started rateling @ 44,000 and the other just started @ 70,000. The most recient one started having "chugging" problems after being under a load for a while and got warmed up. The problem I am now having is that the dealer informed me that the cat is on "NATIONAL BACK ORDER" with no ETA for the warrenty replacement of the cat. If the cat is on this type of back order, shoul they be on a recall?

Does anyone know of a dealer who has a cat in stock so that I can get mine replaced before I get pulled over for generating a tremendous noise that sounds like a lot of empty beer cans in the bed.

Dave - I have the exact same condition with mine (3 cats later). I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions, and it sounds like the problem is the 02 sensor in front of the cat, (there are 2, one forward, one after for emissions) causing it to run rich. It overheats the cat, causing the ceramic to shatter. They don't always show up on the computer, so the shop may not think to check it. I'm in the process of changing mine (it's on the list of the 10,000 other **&%#@@!! things I have to do).

Oh the sweet sound of cans dragging under your dakota isn't nice!!!!, After 3 Catalitic Converts, I really hate this truck, I have spent at least 40+ hours at dealer for repairs, I have 30K on my truck, Just got another one replaced!, When is this going to stop!, Dealer said"Almost looks like a sulfer build-up in Cat", this is why corrosion caused the guts to loosen on the converter and make that terrible can dragging sound, Whne does the warranty expire on this cat?, Well maybe the next owner with have to deal with it because this truck is junk!, I love the looks and the power but man this is real piece of @#$%!

I finally got my converter replaced and the truck seams to run better. I have 79,000 miles and the converter warrenty exires at 80K. I was thinking about keeping the truck, but with the new Ram 1500 Quad out at the same price as the Dakota and the future cat problems that will come out of my pocket, I must give up my baby and go down a different road. Good luck to all

I am not sure how much the replacement converter is from Dodge. You might want to check and see if there are other converters on the market that are not from Dodge that may hold up better.

We, as owners, should not be continually hastling with replacing the same part multiple times, even at "no" cost to us. The converter might be covered under warranty, but having it replaced 3 times is very expensive if you factor in the time it takes to go back and forth to the dealer. And of course, you have to take the truck in for service, and since the part is not in stock, you have to go back in a second time when it finally arrives.

Does anyone know what needs to be done in order for Dodge to recall the converters and fix the problem if it with the converter or the oxygen sensors?

If you are in the States, I think you have up to 80,000 miles. It isn't an option for those friggin dealers, if it is bad, they have to replace it. It's the law.

I had a problem with the catalytic converter on my 2001 Jeep Grand cherokee at about 8,000 miles. Took it to the dealership and was told it was just a fluke. They didn't replace it. Today, at 29,000 miles the car lost power on a busy freeway during rush hour. Catalytic Converter light came on. Was told it had to be replaced. I had to rent a car and was told if I had an extended warranty Chrysler would pay for the rental otherwise it was my problem. Somehow that doesn't sound right to me. Since they opted not to replace it in the first place.

I have a 96 5.2L Dodge ram 1500 sport club cab.
After about 2 mufflers and a rattling cattie, I decided to take the baffles Ceramic out of the cattie. The gas mileage seems okay, but the check maintenance light is on due to the 02 sensor. Right know there is 130.000 miles on the truck.
After about 15,000 since the cattie work was done the thing still pings and smokes at start up.
With the baffles out will that cause the exhaust to be white and thick at start up? And how can i get the service light off? There should be a recall on these exhaust systems from Dodge.

I just called my local Dodge dealership. They're very defensive about the problem, claiming that if I didn't maintain it properly that I will be charged an $80 checkout fee. They say that the only way the catalytic converter will go bad is through improper maintenance or physical damage (i.e. being hit). Has anybody else been through this game?
