Subject: new head unit

Message:
Looking for your advice. I am looking to replace my current unit(came with truck) with either a Kenwood or a Pioneer. My truck now has the infinity system(5 band EQ, joystick, etc.)

Are there any tips, traps, gotcha's I should be aware of and which model would you go with.

My main interest is clarity, and MP3 support. No changer needed and no speaker changes contemplated.

Thanks

Hello. My personal preference is Pioneer. I think they make great head units. I dont know much about Kenwood's head units. I am going to be getting the Pioneer DEH-P740MP. It is great for MP3's. I doubt you would have any problems if you replaced your head unit. As for the model, it depends on how much you want to spend. But with stock speakers, I would get the Pioneer DEH-P7400MP. - Hoped I helped somewhat. _KrEzEr_

Every one I know, myself included, had problems with Pioneers. The face got messed up and the unit would shut on and off. This was years ago though when detachables fist came out and they may have fixed the problems, but I'll never buy one again.

Was your original HU a CD and Cass, or just CD (or just Cass)?

Thanks for the feedback guys. I ordered a pioneer HU and kit from SoundDomain.

phenryiv1 - my original HU only had the cassette player. I did add an Alpine 6-CD changer and that works well. It won't work with the Pioneer so I guess I will sell it. I believe it's the CHM-620 but need to verify that. Anyone interested - make an offer.

im about to purchase the alpine cda-7897, id go with th 7898, but illh ave 2 amps 1 under each seat, so there is no more room for another. ill have one powering my subs, and ill have 2 6x9's in the bed under the fiberglass tonneau and bed rug bed liner, for those nights just chillin on the tailgate. system includes 2 10" rockford he2's which i already own, and a sony 1200w mono amp to power them, ill get the mtx thunderform (I hope there is enough mounting depth for them cause the mtx subs are terrible) ill get a component 6 1/2 doe the front and possible a set for the rear and alpine 6x9 type r's for the bed w/ an alpine 2 ch amp (the more powerful one, i forgot the model #) ill eventually switch to all alpine but there are other things more important right now POWER!!!!!

Well I've had just about all the brands out there and here is what I've found. Older model sony's are good. The mobile es line. The new sony explode stuff is junk. Skips like crazy and the one with the flip out face, the face fell off. Jensen... my friend insisted. The internal amp blew out in one, then we got the black panel like the el kameleon and the face fell off of that. JVC, quit playing cd's. Kenwood, nothing bad so far. Alpine, i've owned 3 of them and no complaints about any of them. My friend cracked the face plate on one but that was cause he was doing a 164 at 40hz and it fell off and hit the floor. Pioneer, loved it. But after selling it to a friend the buttons started peeling. Hard to explain, looks nasty now. I still have a sony in my truck (model 910) and wouldn't trade it for anything. I've never made it skip and believe me I tried... 155db systems, real bumpy roads in a low rider, baja in the dodge, hell one time I even pulled it out of the dash and shook it like a paint can for about 30 seconds and still not a skip.

Ive never had a prob w/ skipping CD Players. MY KD-sh99 Really kicked ass I was kinnda dumb for selling it seeing that there was nothing wrong w/ it but this ALPINE does every thing So Im pretty happy w/ it. Plus I would say that you have to see the alpine in person to know how nice it is. This is right below the F1 CD Players.

Well I will put in my 2 cents. I have owned all 3 units talked about. My first was an Pioneer, then a Kenwood, and now an Alpine. I would have to say the cheepest was the Kenwood. Then i got smart and got it all, i have alpine 7977 HU(passave, the only way to go), Inintty perficts componits for the frount, Perfects 2 way corssover coaxals in the rear, and 2 V12 amps under each seat, OH and one JL W3 pushing 250. and is sounds hella good, and i dont care about what is sounds like out side, but is sure shakes the hell out of the inside and breakes the glass with the highs. It also helps to have the system tuned with the crossovers in the apms.

If your lookin for a good head unit get a Eclipse. I've had my for 2 years & had no problems with it. Plus they have the best anti-theft device on the market for car audio. I'm getting to upgrade my headunit up to the Eclipse CD8052. Eclispe is a little on the high side. But you get what you pay for. Either spend a little extra now or a whole lot more later!!
