Message: To anyone that can help, or if you know about this stuff. I saw that Rd knew about eletrical, so maybe you can help. I am putting in a system for my truck, which will include two amps (if you need to know all the specs click on the JLw6v2 form, they are in there.)One amp will be a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 200X2 and the second is an Orion 250 G4 800X1. I know I will have to add an extra battery, but I do not know much about this area of car audio. I know that I should get an optima battery (i was looking at an Optima 870 A Deep Cycle battery) but am confused beyond that. I am going to get all of this done professionally, but would like to learn more about what I am spending my money on and how it works. I don't understand how they wire the battery, or how the second battery works with the main car battery and the generator. Is this the right battery to get, or should i get a cheaper one/ more expensive one? I have heard there are two different ways to wire it (Parallel and something else?), what are they and how does it work? Where should I mount the battery in an Ext Cab Sport Dakota? Is there anything else I need to learn about, please tell me...Thanks _KrEzEr_

Message: running another battery will put lots more strain on your alt.. having to charge your main battery and also a secondary one.. just run it with the one battery and see how it turns out.. i have two amps and usin only the one battery.., just try having one good battery instead of too.. you may be surprised

Message: Thanks all, yea, I figuired out what I need to do today. I thought I was going to have to get a second, but instead am just going to get a good battery. Which one should I get to run both car and audio off of, the Optima Red cap ones or the yellow ones? I have heard they are equal, but which should I get??? Thanks-_KrEzEr_

Message: First off if your going to replace the stock battery, replace it with a battery that has a longer deep cycle life. This will give you longer battery life. Basically your cars charging system works like this. When the vehicle is running your alternaor is charging your battery and running all your accessories. THe stock battery is designed to power all acc and have usually about 10-15 amps to spare (sometimes a little more). So when your audio system is exceeding the output amperage of your alternator it has to get power from somewhere ( THE BATTERY). When this takes place the current draw on the battery causes it to deep cycle (Stock batteries can do this maybe 4-5 times before they are shot.) So therefore you want a battery that can deep cylce a large amount of times with no side effects (LIKE A DEAD BATTERY) So in my opinion I would go with a Stinger 1000 or if price is a factor do the Optima Yellow Top.
GOOD LUCK

Message: THanks RD, that is the info I was looking for. I will look into both batteries, but I just wanted to make sure an OPtima 870 deep cycle is enough power for both my system and truck...Thanks _KrEzEr_

Message: Stay away from capacitors!!! They are worthless. If you are only going to be running 1000watts total the one battery under your hood will be fine. You may want to upgrade this to a larger battery but you shouldn't need a second. The alternator charges and maintains 14.4 volts. A battery's normal sitting voltage is 12 volts. When the stereo plays each amp will draw a given amount of current. Both amps you are referring to playing at the same time shouldn't even draw 150 amps. Your voltage will drop a little but not bad. As long as your voltage doesn't drop below 12 volts its not harming your battery a bit. When a battery "deep cycles" is when you are not charging the battery in any manner and the voltage gets really low 7-9 volts. What you want to look for in a battery is how many CCA's and the reserve capacity. 900-1000 CCA's and 150+ reserve is a decent battery. After you get this battery upgrade your charging wire and ground wires also.
