Message:
Hi everybody. ((Hi doctor Nick)) Guess You would have to watch the Simpsons to know what I am talking about. Anyway, I wanted to ask everyone a couple questions. I got my Dakota a few months ago (yes, I am young, 16) and I am now ready to put in a system. I have been saving to do this since I was like 13, so I plan on doing it once and doing it right. For sub(s), I want to use the new JL W6's. The only thing is I am not sure if I want one or two of them. I dont know if anyone has any experience with old or new JL w6's, but maybe you can help me. I have heard one old JL W6 and I know I want more than that with better, cleaner, bass. I was thinking about orginally going with a w7, but thought that is too much. So, if I put in two w6v2s, will that be too much or just right? I am looking for a clean, low, bass. I am gonna make it loud, but I only have an ext cab, so it doesn't need to blow my ears out. I have heard the new JL 6v2s are the same design and technology as the W7, but will that make it so much better that 1 of them will do me fine? Anyone's advice will help. Thank you. _ Krezer_ P.S. Here is the rest of my system, tell me what else I should do.
To power the subs: If I get one sub 400X1 HCCA Orion
If I get two, 800X2 HCCA Orion.
Deck: Pioneer DEH-P740MP
Amp for the Speakers: Phoenix Gold 200X2 Tantrum Amp
Speakers: Infinity Kappas Componet 6 1/2s

i read that whole post, thought i missed it cuz i was drunk, reread it, and still dont see it. it depends on what size you are talking. if you are saying 2 10w6v2's over a 10w7 or 12w6 over 12w7. it all depends. i would say for you, 2 12w6's would be plenty bang, or one 10 or 12w7 but since you are 16 and are just getting into audio, i would suggest sticking w/ the w6's for the $ and so you can upgrade down the road....

Yea, I kinda confused my self in that letter. Sorry about that. What I was saying is I was thinking about getting 2 12" W6v2's for the back of my ext dak. I was orginally looking at one 12 w7, but thought that is wayyy to much for a first time sub. I wanted to make sure that if I got two w6v2, that I wouldnt be getting something that is as loud as a w7 or louder. So basically I want something that is an inbetween. I would end up not using a lot of the power if I had a W7...Thanks Krezer

I just put 2 12" W6v2s in mine. I put them in a custom sealed box downfiring (didn't want all the bass right in my back) in the ext. cab. For power, i got a RF 800a2 that puts about 400 watts to them at 2 ohms.

They are the greatest subs i have heard sound quality-wise. But they aren't specifically made for SPL, so don't expect them to do what some of the other hardcore subs do. Don't get me wrong, they can be VERY loud and still have extremely tight bass. But like i said, i put them DOWNFIRING in a SEALED box. I'm sure that if you put them in a really good ported box, that they would be plenty loud.

But, two w6v2's will probably be louder than one w7. I just saw the JL audio car at the NOPI nationals with two w7's in the back. It sounded SOOOOOO good. It was EXTREMELY loud but still bearable (for daily driving) unlike those other manufacturer's vehicles that would almost blow you out of the seat.

The w7's won't hit clean. They will put out a lot of bass but it won't be the clean bass that most people enjoy. I myself am going with 2 12' mtx's in a fiberglass box, being pushed by 600 watt amp. It hits pretty damn hard. I took it back up to car toys where I bought it from and they were simply amazed by the quality, saying it shouldn't sound this good and blah blah.
Also, you can look at the nickle plated impp's or the infinity's. For the price of those w6's, these are well within your range. It just all depends on what you want. Low bass, clean bass, or what. I just prefer it loud, and low:) Happy hunting, let us know when you get it installed! Good luck!

dude....the w7's were MADE to be the tightest and cleanest sounding. they are THE BEST i have ever heard in that respect. you must have heard them in a really sh!tty box with sh!tty power. put them in a good box with the right space, and put the cleanest power you can to them, and they will BLOW YOUR MIND. infinity and impp has nothing on them. have you seen the magnets on these jokers ?? let alone the surrounds ?? yes they thump, but they are loud and still clean as a bell. ALL jl subs are that way. they don't make a bad one. look at any advertisement for the w7's. why do you think it only has one word ?? "TIGHT"

I just just heard a 10" W7 for the first time and just about creamed my pants. By far the best sub I've ever heard. The guy that owned the place we were at compared it to 3 18" JLs and they weren't anything compared to the new W7. I myself was wondering if there was a big difference between the W7 and the W6v2. I wouldn't mind saving some money if the W6v2 is pretty close in sound quality to the W7. I have a 98 S-10 extended cab with 2 12" Pioneer VCCS subs and I'm starting to think about upgrading. I'm also getting either the DEH-P740MP or the DEH-P840MP cd player from Pioneer. As soon as I heard the W7 though I was pretty much sure I was going to own one in the near future. By the way, I was wondering if those Orion amps are any good? I myself was looking at an Ultimate Digitalis 1300 watt (RMS) to pair with my new W7 (or W6v2). I can get them at a pretty reasonable price for a digital amp, which is good because i don't plan on spending a grand for a JL amp, although I'm sure they kick ass. Their website is www.ultimate-sound.com if anyone wants to check it out. I've heard one with two audiobahn subs and it was pretty nice.

The w7's will get alot louder than the w6v2's (more spl). But that is because of the power handling. The w6v2's recommend 400 watts rms while the w7's recommend something like 600. also the surrounds are a bit bigger (i think) and the magnet is fu@king monstrous. but they are both killer sound quality subs. but just remember that it will sound like crap if you don't have it in a decent box.

If your comparing w6v2 to the w7, the w7 basically still blows it away. One 13.5 is probably louder than anything you have ever heard, at least until you hear two of them. Overall this is THE BEST and cleanest sub I have ever heard and would recommend it vastly over any other sub on the market.

Considering they both deliever the same sound quality, would 1 W7 be louder than 2 W6v2s? Or would the 2 W6v2s even compare to the 1 W7? I'm looking to buy either a 10" W7 or two 10" W6v2s. I don't want to sacrifice sound quality for loudness though. I'm guessing I'd save money buy getting just a 10" W7. Also, does anybody know how much the magnet on the W7 actually weighs? Or the w6v2? I listened to a W7 and the guy that had it told me to pick up the box. I'm guessing that magnets on those bitches must be massive.

I just read the 10w7 weighs 30 pounds. At this point I'm not sure what I'll buy, but I'm trying to figure out how I can make a sweet ass custom box for em. I wish there was a way I could have the box be clear, like if I could build it out of inch thick plexiglass or something. Does such a thing exhist? If so I imagine it would be relatively expensive. Is there anything that is strong enough and thick enough that is opaque I could use to make a box?? It's not really neccessary but I thought it would be cool to see the inside of a box and stick a neon light in there.

There is a guy on ebay that sells all plexiglass boxes. Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1944901985
But you could build it out of mdf and put a plexiglass front on it. The magnets on these things do look sweet. I wish I could have figured out a way to do it when I built my box, but I wanted my amps where the plexiglass would have gone.

That bandpass is pretty badass. I need something that will fit in the cab of my truck though. I have an extended cab but what I want to accomplish is saving space in the cab as well as having a sweet looking box. Well I thought about having the front of the box where the sub would be and the back, the bottom, and the top of the box be MDF, then use plexiglass for the sides of the box. I would port it somewhere probably and also put a neon light in the bottom of the box. I guess I'll wait til I save up an extra 500 or so dollars and actually get the W7.

I sell JL Audio products, and the W6 & W7 are of course the best sound quality subwoofers on the market. And in some points depending of corse on the amplifier used can produce amazing results. I have an Xtant X1001 running them now. All our Dukes have have said they can get W6s to the same level and cant tell any difference between the 2. Its mostly air space and power handling.

Awesome subs. But what Ive heard is better is the new MTX subs the 9500. The rep said that the 10's weigh in at over 50 pounds and push 40% more air than the 12 W7. Very very cool. He also said that when they bench it they run 3,000 watts continuous power for 13 hours until the whole sub melts down. They are rated from 750-1000 RMS. And also they have a 3 inch excursion. Nothing can touch these subs around five hundred and some dollars though. Check out www.mtx.com

I purchased 2 jl audio 12'' w6v2 subs. Do you think powering it with a kicker KX800.2 amp would do it good, or you think there are better amps out there that would do an awesome job at a decent price? Also, should I put them in a ported, sealed or bandpass box... whats the difference? Thanks

Guys, I agree that a JL sub and JL amp would be the way to go. I'm about to either go with one 10w3v2 powered by the 250/1, or a 10w0 powered by JL's new e1200. But for a setup where the sub will be firing into the listening area, such as a Dakota quad cab, TWO big subs and a monster amp is just too much! Your hearing is in grave danger. :) Just be careful with that volume knob!

These subs are the cleanest ever and they are definetly very lound. Becareful about those Rockford amps man they are really over rated. They dont puch near the power they say. The old hand built Rockford were cool. Get a clean amp JL, MTX, XTANT, ECLIPSE spend some money, I mean your buying a awesome subs for pretty expensive why run it with a crappy @ss amp.
