Subject: Alpine head unit IP: Logged
Message: I've finally narrowed down my choice for a new deck. I'm going to go with the Alpine CDA-7893, which is 60w x 4. I will be hooking up a JL Audio 8w6 (200 watts RMS) and a JL Audio 250 watt amp. My question is this: Alpine suggests running a fused cable to the battery since the amplifier is so powerful on the head unit, but if the only thing I will be running off of the deck is the sub then do I still need to do this? I thought that since I'd still be using the factory amp I wouldn't need the fused cable to the battery. Thanks for your help!

Message: I just bought an Alpine Head Unit and installed it myself. I have a couple of buddies that work at a stereo shop (great deal on deck) and they asured me that it was important to use the inline fuse that came in the wireing harness. In adition Alpine also requires that you run a minimum of a 10 gauge wire for the power straight to the battery to keep it in warrenty. If warrenty is not a concern then do it for cleaner power.
And remember that this is DC power, the device will draw what it can and the fulse keeps that from damaging the unit if there is a short.

Message: If you take off the dash to install the deck you can run the power and ground behind the dash and over to where the fuse box is. from there you can see the mangle of wires that all go through the Fire Wall in the same place.
It is easy to poke a small hole in the big 8" diamiter rubber gromett. Then you can run your power directly to the battery and the ground to one of the multiple grounding stips under the hood.
It might be a good Idea to plumb in another inline fuse at the battery and hope that if one pops it is that one. That way you can avoid pulling the dash to change a fuse. (to stay within you alpine warrenty do not bypass their inline fuse.)
