Message:
hay all, im Alex I have a problem! i have 2 12" Kenwood Subwoofers and a Jensen amp. The subs are700 watts max 175Watts RMS and the amp is a 4/3/2 channel and MOSFET power supply and its bridgeable 400 Watts. my subs are 4 ohms and on the amp box says it puts out 200 watts rms to Bridged @ 4 ohms to 2 channels. every time i turn it up the bass hits but it shuts down my amp and my stereo, then it turns back on and it keeps on doing that until i turn it down. What is wrong ? can anybody help me please? -Alex

You may be pulling wayy too many amps and your battery can't handle it. Try this...

Disconnect the Amp and then try the radio that way...if its fine then you need a CAP. 1 farad.

And your also prb pulling too many amps from your altnator.

Its mostly a power issue you have..

Hope this helps..

You might have something that is loose. I doubt it is pulling that much current to turn everything off... List all your connections, where they are going and we can start there if you want my help. Everyone is saying add a cap for thing that it seems like a power issue. Its called troubleshooting...

Check your speaker connections. If they are faulty there is a chance that you are tripping the protection circuit on your amp. A short in the cables will cause a massive current surge. At high volume, you will be driving more current through the system. An open will put the output of the amp in a high impedance condition. That simulates the amp trying to bang its head against a brick wall. There is no place for the power to go, so it reflects back into the amp. Just another possibility.

What gauge wire are you using for the power/ground to the amp and to the subs? I had a similar problem once before by using cheap-a$$ wire. If you don't have it already, get yourself some monster cable.

Listen... YJ know your facts before you state something that you dont know. Im not trying to be an a$$whole but we are also trying to save money for our fellow dak owners and telling them to buy expensive wire because you wasted your money is not the thing to do. 4 gauge is 4 gauge 2 gauge is 2 gauge and so on. Know your stuff before you post... If you need a bigger guage wire go to www.delcity.net and look under wires and cable you wont find it cheaper. With the problem that still doesnt explain why the deck turned off too... Do what I said the first time and let me know... Is there a line level converter on your system or is there an aftermarket deck?

Just thought I'd share a similar experience. In addition, monster cable is really not that expensive. Nearly every type of wire is different in some aspects. You can pick up some nickel-wire up here in Bellevue, WA for $5000 per foot. Many of the mariners and other celebrities buy the stuff but I wasn't trying to get the guy to pick up some expensive stuff, but suggested to pick up some decent wiring to eliminate one possibility. Just to clarify your confusion, my post was not intended for Alex to attempt to waste money. When I install a system, I do it with budget AND quality in mind. I realize it's a jenson amp, but to reiterate, wiring could certainly be the, or one of the, problems Alex is experiencing.

Since your post stated that you know more about system installs, you are welcome to that crown. I certainly don't need or want it. Just wanted to try and give a bit of experience to add to Alex's ammunition against his problem.
Certainly didn't want you to get worked up about it. ; )

Sorry,
I wasnt getting wound up about it, it was early in the morning, and I was in a rush to get to work. I read it now and I see that it sounds pretty doggish. Sorry for the (arghhh) bashing.

Hey Alex are you getting any of this?

Hey Alex, Check youh wiring on your amp & speakers. Because I was having the same problem with my speakers. But I have 2 Kicker VR-10's that are dual 4 ohm voice coils with a Kicker ZR-360 driving them. When I hooked them up in series & had my amp bridged I was having the same problem when my amp & subs cutting off. It was because my amp was seeing it as a 1 ohm & my amp is not stable at a 1 ohm load. Once I hooked the speakers up parallel my problem was solved. I know that I liked the way the subs hit when they were wired in series but my amp can't handle the load so I have to leave it as is till I can get another amp that will handle a 1 ohm load. Hope this helps.

First off, dont buy Kenwood subs, they are poorly made. I have 2 15" audiobahn Flame Q subs and 2 clarion amps. Before I had that problem on and off with my Rockford amps and infinity Ref subs. One reason that just my subs would stop is because my amp would overheat and shut off. When your system shuts down check your amp and see if it is too hot too touch. Another thing is that your remote cable or anything could be loose. I doubt that it could be a battery problem because you are only pushing 200 watts max to each sub. Your battery should be able to handle that. In short, if EVERYTHING is cutting out on you it has to be a wiring problem. Pull out your deck and check all of the connections. Make sure no wires are loose or touching. And if that doesnt work, spend more money and get a better system.

You should also check your highs to see if they are blown or if any of the connections are grounding out. If a connection is grounding out then it could be shutting off your radio which in turn shuts off your amp. This may not happen until it is at a high volume. If you are using the proper gauge wire you should not be having any power delivery problems with that setup.

Dude just break out the fluke(or multimeter) and test away. I was shocked this weekend when "my" amps turned off and jumped back on (in any of my installs its like a 1/150 thing) So I broke out the old multimeter and went to work. I found that the fuse was faulty... (NOT BLOWN BUT FAULTY) This fuse was the in line fuse for one of the power cables. So check away killer...

is your head unit hooked to a wiring harness and then to the car factory wiring harness. your stereo may not be seeing enough volts when the volume is turned up. check it out with a volt meter. plug the volt meter in the constant power and turn the volume up or either in the switched if the voltages drops with the stereo up on either one of them u need more voltage . High power head units are made to run 12 volts and nothing less.

emma you are running 8 ohm with a dvc sub in series. run in series adds the load (pos to neg) when you run in parallel use the inverse of the load 4 ohm =1/4... 2 coils .5 ohm load .to low
(parallel is all pos together all neg together)
is your amp 2 ch if so run one coil to each ch if not you will need one more sub or a diff amp.

for power problems a common problem is the ground connection it MUST be as good as the power usually ground is taken from the body a very good conductor BUT the body sits on rubber mounts there is a factory ground strap somewhere but is only as big as the factory components need. so all that is needed in that case is a big fat wire going from the bat neg to the body. and for keepin it cheap and tough ive only ever used welding cable works great costs little very durable and has a high strand count to maintain flexability
good luck all

-not related but similar-

Could it be possible for the subs to skip the CD player? Mine does that often. Thinking of buying a new one, but I want to make sure that it wont happen again if i do.
