 Subject: quad cab bass

I just bought a 2002 quad cab with the infinity sound system. The stereo sounds good but I would like some more low end(bass). I have a bench seat of front. I have read I can put a 8" woofer behind the rear drivers side seat. What other options do I have. Anybody with experience with quad cabs. thanks

There are a CRAP-LOAD of pages about this, I have been dieing to hear an answer to the question. I have tried sever things to add speakers to my QC, but there is always something in the way. I didn't want to do anything drastic, but it looks as though I am going to have to, to get the sound I want. All I can say is, good luck and keep checking back to see if anyone has come up with anything... and let us know if you find something.

i have a ten inch sub behind the seat,alpines and 2 amps. cant see anything but the door tweeters. and those are going to be flush mounted next.

has any 1 have this problem you going down the road with the radio up a little loud in a couple of minutes it seem like the radio get softer then you turn the radio nob up and it gets louder is there an external amp anywhere someone please help sorry for the long post needs some answers thanks

I listen to my stock radio/tape player, full volume, all the way home, everyday... yeah it sucks, the stock unit can't handle the bass, but the speakers can? I don't understand why car/truck makers design stuff like that... What if I WANT to blow the speakers? It would motivate me to buy new ones!
But something you can do if you plan on keeping the stock unit... turn the bass and treble all the way down. Then turn the volume up... the midrange you hear is what you can't adjust, so turn the bass up a little first... until it sounds good at a loud volume, then turn your treb up until it sounds good. That's about the only thing you can do.
At the same time!!! save money for another head unit, like me :) Um if anyone wants to donate money to the help me get a better head unit fund, I will gladly take it. OR you could just give me a better one, that works too YOU HEAR THAT MAKERS OF AUTO AUDIO GEAR? GIVE ME FREE STUFF!!! i'LL EVEN PUT YOUR STICKERS ON MY TRUCK. (I don't have any, don't want any... see the things I would do for you?)

I put two eights in the back seat but just isn't enough for me so I'm gonna put a 15 in front of the smaller seat. I'll you all know how it wokrs out when I get it done.

Slanty Shanty - 98% of the world thinks the stock system is great... scary huh? However the automakers could careless what YOU think of the radio, to them the Infinity system is the "better" option and selling point. You see they make CARS not stereos. Same with just about everything else on the vehicle... it's a compromise of money. The truck would be 100X better with slotted disc brakes and 18" tires, built-in supercharger, leather seats, sunroof, adjustable suspension, automatically climate control, satellite TV and so on, but it would cost $80,000 then. If thats what you want buy a BMW or Lexus - they have pretty good sound systems from the factory ;)
And no car audio company is going to give you anything unless you own an installation shop or electronics store and compete in sound offs where they can the exposure/sales to make up for the free goodies.
Welcome to the real world... sucks doesn't it :p ;)

Take the back seats out
Cut away the material on the backs of the seats
Remove the metal bars from the backs of the seats
Look at the back wall of the cab
Take that carpet pad thing off and cut it hovizontal, just above the bend
Look down
Take those air vents out and seal the hole
Look down again
Cut away the carpet from where the seats bolt in back
Take your jack out, and cut away the mount for it
Put the jack somewhere else in the truck, you will need it later
Build two boxes that are 16 1/2"H, 16 1/2"W,
4 1/2"TD, 7 1/2"BD
(that box will BARELY fit behind the drivers side seat, a bigger one can be built for the passenger side seat... in which case you would only build one of each, duh :)
That should be 16 1/2"H, 25"W (maybe 26" I can't remember off hand, have to check that one)
4 1/2"TD, 7 1/2"BD
I've never known anyone to have two of the same size speakers in two different boxes, but if that's what you want to do.
Personally, I don't think the smaller of the two boxes will be enough room for a 12" speaker... But this is about all you will get back there.
NOW, if you really want to try something new, you can make just one box... but you have to account for the bracket for the seats, on the floor. I don't think I can explain those deminsions in words, you will just have to take a look for yourself and get kinda creative.
The worst part is going to be putting the boxes in and getting the seats back in.
You need a buddy, one that won't mind handing you a beer because you are going to need it.
Those boxes WILL fit behind the seats, but like I said, BARELY!!!
The biotch of the task is getting the hooks back on the wall, with the seats folded out (like you are going to sit in them) BECAUSE you need the space behind the lower piece of seat (where the bottom depth comes in)
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FOLD THE SEATS BACK UP ONCE YOU GET THE SEAT BOLTED BACK IN!!!
AND, have fun getting all of the bolts back in the seat bracket... this is where your buddy will come in handy, one of you will have to hold the seat up while the other one tries to put the bracket around the bolt that is sticking up out of the floorboard
And there you have it. You won't have any room for an amp back there as well, so you should put it under the front seats or something???
I suggest you take as much time as you can with this, because... if you are anything like me... you will get REALLY pissed off, quite a few times. But it can be done.
GOOD LUCK!!! And let us know how things turn out.
I don't think you will be able to get 2 12"s back there because of the lack of air, and because they tend to push out further when a bass note hits (the reason you need to get rid of those metal bars on the backs of the seats) 2 10" absolutely, but if you get 2 12"s I wanna see it, so if you can, take pictures as you go. S~

I have been debating this issue for quite some time now too. I was wondering if anyone has considered removing the 60 bench out of the 40/60 back seat and replacing it with another 40 seat? This would create some space between the two sections. Wouldn't this be enough room for a small inclosure that resembles some sort of armrest? Then you would still have room for 2 in the back, have the seats still able to pivot up, and have a decent thump. I dunno...haven't tried it yet, but am thinking about it. (I've gotta save up for my lift/tires first)

Was thinking the same thing myself Steve. But I'm not finding anywhere to buy replacement seats. I have found seats, but not the factory seats. I wish I could buy 4 leather durango seats and throw those in my QC, but unless I happen to get lucky at the grave yard, doesn't look like it's going to happen. There is always the mounting of those seats as well, I know they can easily be put into the front, but the back would be a little tricky. Well maybe one day,S~

Here's what I did in a nutshell. Already had some equipment so I used what I had. For the bass I wanted a setup for me to listen to most of the time but is removable. I ran the power, remote on and grounds to gold junction blocks under the pass seat. The hot ones are fused. Also under there are Monster Cable RCAs coiled for the input ran under the carpet on the pass side from my Alpine deck. I covered a small piece of plywood with gray carpet made to fit the rear pass side floorboard area. I prewired the Precision Power(~300 watts bridged mono) amp and crossover on the plywood. Three 3' long wires run off of it and are tipped with gold tip connectors for the hot, ground and remote on. I have a dual voice coil 15" JL Audio sub in the proper size square box. Most of the time I just fold the rear pass side seat up. Put the sub in facing rearward toward the seat with about a 2" gap. Then I drop in the wood and make the four connections. The setup is very clean and takes less than 5 minutes to install/remove. When removed you can't tell it was ever there. There is only me and the wife so most of the time it stays in. I can still haul one extra with it in and if I need to haul 4 I just remove it. That is the only disadvantage. The first time I turned it up the rear view mirror can unglued and fell in my lap. Had to make a trip to Walmart for a glue kit. The stock highs and mids (speakers)couldn't keep up so they've been replaced with MB Quarts. I made a custom kick panel for the pass side front a little wider than the stock one. Under it I replaced the stock amp with a Precision Power one and mounted my crossover under there. All the wiring was replaced with monster cable. While the door panels were off I dyna-matted them. System now sounds incredible. Most of the equip I already had. My guess is if you ran the same setup, with labor, would be about $3000 or about $2000 if you did all of the install yourself.

I finally finished my system inspired by TonyC.
I replaced the center concole with a pair of JL audio W3 8" woofers. I used a method similar to JMII's to mount my amp. that is a PG Tantrum 600.
I put it behind the 40 split in the back seat.
Because I removed the stock front seats and went with racing buckets I did not feel the need to replicate the factory center seat for my box.
We tried to work with the space allowed but the primary concern was proper air space. The box did turn out a little larger than stock but we were able to use the factory arm rest.
It sounds incredible! I replaced the head unit with an alpine and ran the rear door speakers from it, the PG is running the fronts and the subs.
I also replaced all 4 door speakers with JL audio 6 inch speakers.
I did all the work myself and still managed to spend $1500. I will try and get some pics if anyone is interested.

i took out the little seat inthe front and put a center console in with a 10" JL sub in it put a kenwood 350 under the pass side seat bitch hits hard total cost was about 650 to have the box mabe the sub and the amp

I have 3 8" kicker solo baric L7's behind my back seats and a rockford fosgate 1000bd with a capacitor under my drivers seat. Hopefully soon im going to get an amp for my speakers and that will go under passanger seat. I have a sony head unit (wich hopefully will be replaced witha kenwood soon) and Blaupunkt component speakers in the front and 2 ways in the back. If you heard this you wouldnt believe they were 8" subs. It HITS! I love it. Built boxes myself so i saved alot of money. The front and back pannels of the boxes are 1/8" mdf laminated in 8.6oz fiberglass and the rest of the box is 3/4" mdf. Woofers need a grille over them so that they have room to move between the seat. Sytem not only hits hard but is increadibly clear.

The only thing i did was take out the stuff thats on the back wall. I just cut it at the bend and left a little bit on the sides. If thats the size box you heard that you had to make whoever made it deffinatly doesnt have enough air space. If you want to get the right air space its actualy quite a task. The bottom of the box is The front and back of my box is made of 1/8" mdf wood laminated in fiberglass so its about 1/4" thick. Also on the back of the longer box(there is 2 boxes behind the seat) you have to cut out a rectagle and put 1/2" tall x 1/2" wide strips of wood around this rectangle then cover this to go around the air vent that is back there. Its hard to explain but if you want the drawings email me at blackdak20@aol.com and ill send them your way. There is aproximately .42 cuft. in each section of the box. I have woofer grilles over the woofers so that they have room to move between the box and the seat. The whole thing is kinda hard to explain, but if you have any questions feel free to email me with them and I will try my best to explain whatever it is to you. I just bought a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad cab. It doesn't have an infinety system. I want to replace the stock speakers with others. I'm not sure what size to use as far as the front speakers. Any suggestions?
