Message: I have messed with cb's for a long time. What I would recommend for a mid-level radio would be a cobra 25 ltd classic or a cobra 29 ltd classic. The 29 has a built in SWR meter that is critical when setting your antennas (needs to be between 1-1.5) There are also newer 25's and 29's with Cobras sound tracker technology that increases modulation and decreases noise. Once you choose your radio---go to a local cb shop if ya have one and have them peak-n-tune the radio for ya. Most shops will charge between 20-30 dollars and it's well worth it. Last of all---get some good antennas with adjustable swr's. If you don't understand how to set them---a local shop will normally do it for free after the peak and tuning. I recommend Wilson's or K-40's. Hope this helps.

Message: No problem guys! Also---cobra and uniden are made by the same companies---so the 25 ltd and the 29 ltd have look alikes that have the uniden name stamped on them. Not sure of the MODEL numbers of the unidens---but they are the EXACT same radios as their respective brothers.

Message: pondhopr has given most of the main info you need to know. Me myself have been building base stations with cb's and have had tons of mobile radios. But i can truthfully say that i have had both uniden and cobra radios and that personally i dont trust the uniden radios at all, mobile or base. they wear out very quickly. But thats just my personal opinion about them. Also i have had excellent luck with midland radios if u can still find one.

Message: The peak-n-tune pondhopr was referring to is for the radio its self. Just to sum it up they peak the output performance and tune the receive of the radio, hence the peak and tune. It truly helps a lot. The only real adjusting i could think of that a cb and linear would require together is the swr (standing wave ratio)adjustment. Because it can vary once you have a much higher output with the use of a linear. Like pondhopr said the lower the nuber the better, but once you get up to 2 or 3 your taking a chance on burning something up internally on the radio and/or linear if you decide to use one. Hope this helps.

Message: If you end up with a high match, using a linear, modulator etc...you need to use quality coax cable, and different length increments, will have an effect on the match as well, its been awhile since I have played with the cb,but there was a particular length that we all used in increments, somewhere around 21 to 24 inch increments.Either way, dont skimp on the coax.

Message: As far as coax goes, its best to keep it in 3ft increments. Its hard to find the exact lenth you need in 3ft increments sometime but you can just buy a roll of it and put your own connectors on the coax. Its pretty easy to do. If im not mistaken the upper and lower side bands just mean going a little higer/lower than the preset frequency for each channel. I used to have a base station with a slider on it which mean i could just go through the entire frequencies instead of using the channels and it would match me up perfect with those talking on lower and upper side bands. So they dont necessarily give you better range, its just that there arent many people talking on that exact frequency.

Message: It dont sound like anyone here knows much about cb radios Yes cobra 25 & 29 are both good radios. The best ones that they made are from the phillipines though which are very hard to come across. These are great starter radios both have a lot of capability. After being modified. Now on the the upper and lower side band radios. all that does is put u in between the regular cb frequencis nobody realy uses those channels that much. cb frequencies are normally used unless u buy a high end radio whith the cappability of 10meter channels (cb is 11 meters). I do not reccomend using an internal swr meter of a radio to set your swr's ur better of buying a cheap swr meter radio shack has them for about $20 unless u are going to set them on a high wattage radio which in that case i would reccomend a dosy meter about$100. The performance of a radio is mainly based on an antenna the better th antenna the better the performance. I would recommend a k-40 or a wilson1000 mag. mount. And for the linear question YES A LINEAR DOES HAVE TO BE MATCHED TO THE CB THAT U PUT IT ON TO FOR BEST PERFORMANCE. If u fail to do this u have a very high chance of blowing up linear. I have seviced radios for a long time now if u dnt know what ur doing take it to a shop. If u have any further questions about cb's e-mail me i will be more that glad to help you!!

Message: I don't even know where to start with this one. Linear amplifiers are illegal for use with CBs which makes all the questions about tuning linears moot. If you want to use the linear don't be surprised if the FCC comes knocking on your door to confiscate your equipment, issue large fines, and maybe put you in jail.
As for USB/LSB. It is called single sideband suppressed carrier for a reason. When transmitting AM (which is what CBs use) you are transmitting a carrier and two sidebands. All of the useful information is in the sidebands and the carrier is basically wasted power. By suppressing the carrier and one of the sidebands all of the power is used to transmit information. However, the person on the recieving end must also be using a radio capable of single sideband and both radios must be set to the same sideband, i.e. upper or lower.
