Subject: Help please..freeair woofers??
IP: Logged

Message:
I read somewhere that freeair subwoofers are best used in trunks since its an enclosed area and it's used more or less as an enclosed 'box'. I have 4 free air woofers, and my question is, I am taking out the back seat of my CC Dakota and building a box to fill up that area. Should I face all the speakers outward, or can I build a bandpass enclosure and produce the same or even better sound. All info is appreciated. Thanks everyone.

What does the manufacture of these "free-air" subs say in regards to putting them in a ported enclosure? Back in the old days Kicker's Free-Air subs could be used in large ported boxes or as free-airs (basically a very large sealed box). Personall I would not mess with a bandpass box unless you are very expeirenced in enclosure design, they are b!tch to build correctly and tune.

As far as what direction the speakers face - they all must face the outside of the box unless your building an Iso-baric arrangement of some kind. If your asking if they all must aim in one direction the answer is no, you could fire two at the roof and two at the front seats with no ill effects.

A blast from the past...

Funny my experience has been the opposite, the worst systems I've heard were those big cone, free-air ones, mostly due to the dreaded "trunk rattle" and roll-over frequencies that were way too high making the systems some like nothing more than loud mid-bass.

So, to answer your question regarding Free-airs these days - a well built & designed, ported box with the correct speakers should out play ANY free air design. Sub design has changed since the 80's to take advantage of smaller enclosures. This is why all the shops are giving you the same story... it's true, so take thier advice! You'd be amazed at what a number of smaller subs in the correct enclosure can do - four 10"s will hit alot harder than two 15"s especially if the amp is undersized.

Im guessing no one ever checks back here . LOl Not one reply since I have posted.

Freeairs no good? LOL I have many satified customers who would beg to differ. If you build a crappy box, If You dont have your stuff right no speaker or sub will work correctly. I suggest following the specs, after all thats 's what they were test at.
I also have the EEM moduals for maximum performance and the DX ad ZR and xs amps . want some cooler subs? Try The XPL Just drop me a line at imeverlast@aol.com and I will help you out.
I do Kicker.
