Subject: How to hook up two amps?
IP: Logged

Message:
I would like to run my front and rear speakers with an amp and my sub (kicker L5 10") with another amp. How do I go about hooking all of this up to the head unit? I'm just unsure of the wiring involved with two amps running with one headunit. My head has 4 pre outs by the way.

Exactly how you do it would depend on the exact configuration of your head unit and your amps. You probably want to run two audio cables from the head unit to your 4 channel amp for the main speakers. It's not necessary, as you can split the signal and use 2 channels of input on the 4 channel amp, but doing so will disable your ability to adjust fade/balance. These two audio cables should probably carry the full range, or be run through a high-pass filter (either in the head unit, in-line, or in the amp itself).

How you connect the sub amp is up to you. If your head unit has a specific set of preamp outs for a subwoofer (they usually include some built-in options in the head unit for low-pass), use them. Otherwise, you could get a 4-channel amp that has its own set of preamp outs with a low-pass filter and jumper the two together.

Like Bill said it depends on the amp(s) and radio. There are kinds of possible configurations. However a simple way is to get a 2 way active crossover. Use the full range in from the radio, then low pass to the sub amp and high pass to amp(s) running the mids & highs. As stated above you'll lose the ability to fade between your front and rear speakers doing this.

I haven't hooked up amps myself, but you'll need to run a power cable from the battery to either a fuse block, which distributes the power from one wire to up to four, with fuses, or a basic block which basically hooks up the one power line with up to four smaller ones. For example only, you run an 8 gauge cable from the battery to the splitter, then 4 gauge from the splitter to the amps. Now, how the remote from you head unit is hooked up, I don't know. Probably a smililar fashion.

Your deck should have RCA jacks coming out of the back of it. How many does it have? If it has four, it might be front/rear, or rear/sub, if it has six, then front/rear/sub. It all depends on what signals your head unit outputs.

You've got that backwards. Smaller gauge number means thicker cable. You would want 4 gauge from the battery, then 8 gauge to the amps, assuming your amps are rated for 8 gauge input. If your amps require beefier cable, adjust accordingly.

As for the RCA's, if you have 4 out, they're probably FR/FL/RR/RL. If your 4-channel amp has a sub preout, run RCA's to that amp from the deck, then run a patch from that amp to the second amp. This should give you non-fading output for your sub.

Crossover

My subs still have some words coming through, because the amp is not that great. I have a crossover which I've been told can take care of that problem. Also my front and rear speakers have a lot of bass coming through them and it sounds horrible. I was wondering what's the best solution I have using the crossover I have. I need to get rid of the bass from the front and rears, and take the rest of the words out of the subs. If you could help that'd be awesome.

Sounds like your crossover is dead, or not setup correctly. You shouldn't be hearing vocals from the subs if the high signal is being cut off by the Xover.

I would try setting the low pass to 80hz for the subs and the high pass to 80hz - 125hz for the mids and tweets. This will allow only the lows to get to the subs and keep the lows from the mids and tweets. Check all the switch settings on the Xover also, you might have the outputs set to "all-pass" which isn't going to filter anything.

i have two kicker 15L5's sittin in the back seat of my dakota club cab....wut would someone suggest i do as far as an amplifier...do i want to go with a powerfull 2-channel or two monos...also i havnt picked out my head unit yet..now im only 17 dont have much more money to work with...is it gona matter if i go with a cheap pioneer cd player..i mean will it effect performance that much?..i was gona do a "Lanzar vibe248" amp which should put somethin like 500-800x2 watts, and a "panasonic dehp3500" head unit. if anyone has some good advice or thinks this would be a totaly wrong move please give me your input..also im kinda confused with the kicker subs wiring on the back..i bought 2ohm subs to get the most power out of them the booklet says 2ohm dual = 4ohm load...why is that if they are 2ohm subs?

hey jeff,
your just not getting the whole "ohm" situation. You have 2 subs each containing 2 ohms. 2ohms+ 2 ohms = 4 ohm load That's through series connection... There's another way to connect your subs caled "parallel connection" this will take your 2 ohm sub connected the the other 2 ohm sub then, connected to the amp... will produce a 1 ohm load.

Now i have a question.... I have 2 amps and 4 10's...... currently installed is 1 amp and 2 10's. How do i go about connecting the other amp and subs. Do i connect RCA between the amps then run 2 10's to 2nd amp as well as forging the ground and power wires? or do i need to run another damn power and ground to battery and bolt, as well as rca's to another preout in head unit?

You need to run another power wire or you can get a distribution block and split up the wire you already have ran for power. The ground wire you can just connect to a good grounded bolt holding the seats down or something. And as for the RCAs just get a spliter for those too.

And on the Kicker subs, The deal with them is that they say that both voice coils MUST be hooked up at all times of it will mess them up (A friend of mune had that problem). With the dual 2ohm Kicker's you can either wire them in 1ohm or 4ohm. You want to wire that accordingly to what you amp can handle. For instance my amp is 2ohm stable/ bridgable into 4ohm. So I went with the dual 4ohm Kicker S15L7 so that I could wire it in 2ohm (the dual 4ohm can be wired in either 2 or 8ohm) for one channel of my amp. And I will have a 2ohm load going to the other channel. I would have went with the dual 2ohm if my amp could handle a 1ohm load. I am doing good with what I got for now. I am fixing to try and add to Kicker 12's to what I already have. When I get those I am going to have someone professionally build me a bx. I am going to get rid of my back seats. I will be awesome that way I want it too. No one else around here will have anything like it. It will be great.

I happen to have 2 12" Alpine "S" Type subs. I have wired them both to one amp each in 8ohm and when reading the instruction manual on the MRD-M300's it only mentioned the specifications on a 2 or 4ohm load. Now does this mean that I can't hook up the Alpine sub in 8ohms? Should I re-wire the subs back to 2 or 4ohms? Would it damage the system the way I have wired it already?

How much do RCA splitters cost to run them to two amps? How much does a 2 gang distribution block for power cost? Can I hook up two amps without either block? Do I need to get a ground block too, or can I just ground both on a couple of bolts in the trunk or drill a hole for a new couple of screws and ground them?

Wiring the subs in 8ohm will not hurt your amp at all. It actually does not draw as much power from the amp with the higher ohms, but if you want more power to your subs and more volume out of them. I would wire them to what your amp is able to handle.
Spliters for RCA caples are only able $3. And the distribution block should not cost more than 6 or 7 bucks. I would get the distribution block for the power wire when running more than one amp. It is also good to have one because it also has a fuse(which is needed) in it to portect the amp. You can ground them both at the same place on a bolt or something like that. But if you get a "whinning" noise it is because the bolt are not grounded good enough. And as for the remote wire they can just be directly connect together.
