Subject: TUNDERFORM with different subs IP: Logged
Message: I have a MTX thunderform box with the MTX subs. I tried taking them out and putting in JL W3's but the magnets on the JL's were too wide to fit in the box. Does anyone know a good sub that will fit in that box that sounds better than the MTX's? I have 775 watts powering the two 10's.

Message: I have Image Dynamics IDQ DVC subs in mine. They sound a lot better than any Thunderform I've heard with the MTX subs. Only problem si I've heard IDQ changed the design slightly and they might not fit anymore. Real good quality sub though.

Message: Find the measurements for the MTX 6000 sub and when your shopping try to find another sub that is within those measurments. I imagine it will be mostly entry-mid level subs.

Message: Thanks. I have tried that but they never tell you how wide the magnet is. The thunderform boxes get narrower towards the bottom. Guess you don't really know for sure until you try to install them.

Message: Imagine my luck at reading this post.
I bought a Thunderform... The MTX6k's are the speakers that the box is designed for. Nothing else will sound as good in that box as the 6k's(so I was told).
I bought a pair of Infinity perfect 10's for the thunderform, and they are some MONSTER speakers... and consequently they do not fit.
The majority of folks on the board have had good success with the Image Dynamics woofers; the new ones aren't far out of spec to fit in the box. You can make some rings out of MDF or even cork gasket material, about 1/8-1/4" thick and raise the new version IDQ's up just a bit and they will fit in the Thunderform.

Message: Just as PopGenie said the new IDQ's will fit in the thunderform with the slightest modification. After finding out that they were too deep the hard way. (Ordered them off the net) I simply doubled up on the foam installation rings. (One set will come with the TForm and one set with the subs.) The have been in there for a good 6-7 months and have had no problems. And they sound great.

Message: Where did you place the amp to power your Thunderform? I would like to put a MTX 6500D under the passenger seat (bucket, not power), but it looks tight. Any ideas?

Message: I had my Kicker ZR 360 under my rear seat. But it was gettin to hot so I moved it to the floor behind the passager seat. Most sub amps probably are not going to fit under either seat in the Dakota. And if it does it's probably going to run hot.

Message: Funny you should ask Alan. I have the 6500D. I mounted it under the driver seat. It fits in real snug. It won't fit under the passenger seat. I put the 4122 under the passenger seat to power my 6 1/2" JL door speakers.

Message: Jimx - How hot does your 6500D run under the seat? I could mount it on the floor, but then I'd have to build some sort of cover for it. I can't go under the driver seat because it's a power seat and the motors are in the way.
My Dakota is a 2001 Club Cab. Any tips or tricks on the Thunderform or amp installation. I've heard that the Thunderform requires some "fitting" because the holes don't exactly line up. Also, any problems running the 4 gauge wire to the battery?
