Subject: Installed 8" Sub in Quad!! IP: Logged
Message: I just finished putting it all together Saturday and it sounds great! I have a new QC with the Infinity setup and all I did was add the 8 inch sub behind the driver side passenger seat and its amazing how good it sounds. This is for the factory STOCK Infinity system.
Heres what it is:
(1)Rockford Fosgate HE-REP3408 subwoofer (8inch)
(1)Rockford Fosgate "PUNCH" G1X1602 X160.2 Amp.
(1)Rockford Fosgate 10-Gauge Amp Kit
(1)Line Converter (converts stock line to RCA)
(1)Q Logic Box QLT-.3508SBi
And some 16-Gauge speaker wire.
I bought all this at my local BESTBUY. Although, I got the last 8" Q Logic box and Sub, I guess they are discontiuing them. Good for me, I bought the box for $29.99!! Better than trying to build one at that price.
The system is still stock except for the added sub/amp. I wanted a clean factory look AND the best part is, you can't see the new sub or amp so the truck inside looks completely STOCK!! So when you turn on the tunes people are amazed at how good it sounds! And it DOES sound great. :-)
As I said before, I placed the box behind the rear driver side seat (the smaller folding seat). I started by unbolting the seat and taking it out. Then I placed the box (with sub in it and wired) then put the seat back in. Putting the seat back in is the tricky part (I was almost upset thinking it wouldn't fit - but it does), you need to put the hooks in first behind the seat than push the lower part of the seat in til it reaches the back bolts. I was glad the rear bolts stick up, this made it easier to force the seat in place. Then I put the nut on the driver side bolt, tightended it a little, then worked in the other front bolts. NOTE: the rear nut in the center part the cab cannot be replaced, with the box in place it is impossible to get to the bolt - but after tightening ALL 3 bolts, the seat feels plenty secure. Small price to pay for good sound!
This process is discouraging at first but I assure you the box WILL fit! Just make sure it is the EXACT same Q Logic model# or same dimensions as mine.
As for the amp, I placed that under the passenger front seat then stored all the wiring under the center console (I have the bucket seats). The amp wiring actually took the most time. Mainly because I took my time taking off the dash and hooking up the line coverter behind the stereo. I have the amp gain set at 3/4, the coverter at FULL turn, and the deck bass at 1/4 to 1/2. Since the Fosgate amp comes with a "remote adjuster", I can also adjust the amp bass via wire remote (which I ran into my center console) this is why I set the converter to FULL.
After all was installed, I gave her a sound check in the garage and thought it was pretty good, then I realized the amp fuse wasn't in!! Oops! Once that was in the sound gods came and blew me away with the new sub!!!!! This thing kicks a$$! Its not two 10's or 12's, but for a factory deck/speakers and the 8" sub REALLY sounds perfect. I've have MANY huge systems and this one is by far the best sounding for what I put into it. I know for many (younger) guys, this won't be enough hit or bass for you, but for us Quad Cab guys who still want functional rear seats and a stock apperance... this is it!! I'm now a believer in the 8" sub! JUST for the Quad Cab of-course... 12's and 10's for the rest of you. Hehe... ;-)
Sorry for the long post, just making sure I have enough info for anybody interested in this setup.

Message: I forgot to mention, if you do this setup the seat with the box behind it will not be able to fold up anymore. There just isn't the space to allow the cushion move much. Just letting you know!! Other than that, the rest of the cab is exactly the same!

Message: Thanks for the info TallQuad. It sounds like you found a good way to add more bass to the stock system with very little compromise to comfort. I have been looking for ideas like this.
Were there any tricks to getting the dash off to get to the radio wiring? I'm about to tear mine apart.

Message: I was a little shy at first taking off the dash because you really have to yank on the thing to get the clips out. There was only two screws on mine I needed to take out and they are above the guages (easy to find). After that I just started to pull from the deck side to the driver side door and it started to pop out. Just be carefull you don't scratch the lower part of the dash (i did a little), it gets tricky because you have to lift UP the while pulling out the dash so it clears the lower part. Make sense?? Its really not that hard to do, the first time is the hardest, after that you can tear it apart in seconds! Don't forget to unplug the a/c connections just below the deck (there are two), the headlight switch I left on because I didn't need to take the dash completely off to get to the deck.
Once you get to the deck there are only 4 screws holding it in. Just pull out the deck and disconnect the antenna and wire harness and your ready. My advise to you would be to get a wire harness adapter for the line converter. I didn't and wired it myself behind the deck and it took HOURS!! Mainly because I didn't know the wire color codes. Just get the harness it will be MUCH easier and worth the exrta money!! ;-)
The other thing you might wanna do is defuse the airbags. Its easy and helps prevent them from going off when your messing with wiring and such. They are located on the driver side of the dash between the door in the fuse panel. They are easy to see, two yellow clips (one for each airbag) and just pull those out till they stop (they don't come out all the way). I do this anytime I work on major stuff. :-)
I think thats it. Just take your time and watch out for scratching and breaking, I only say this because my truck is new and I hate to dirty it up! hehe... GOOD LUCK!! Let me know how it goes!

Try putting a small battery to the wires next time, you will get a sound from that speaker...

Message: TallQuad,
I did my 8" sub install this weekend. Sounds great. However, I'm having a problem getting the back seat to bolt back up. I have both hooks in and I can get both of the driver side bolts on but the bolts closer to the center of the cab I can't get on. I realize the back center one will need to be left off but how did you get front center bolt on? I can't get near it with the seat down. I push the seat up some but still can't really get to it. Any suggestions? I have the same size Q-Logic box as you so it should fit. Thanks for posting your install. My Quad is rockin' now!

Message: Eric, putting that bolt back in is tricky but it will go in. What I did was lift the lower cushion as much as possible and put a block or something under it to hold it in place. Then I used an open-end wrench to slowing turn the bolt back in once I got the bolt in the hole. It takes some patience and strong fingers, but it should work. There isn't a lot of space (as you know) so the more you can force that seat up and hold it there, the easier it is!
Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Message: Thanks TallQuad. One last question. The Q-Logic box came with what looked to be a sheet of foam-like stuffing. The directions mentioned nothing of stuffing it in the box and I'm not 100% sure that it is even for that. Did you get it w/ yours and did you use it? I guess it may give the sub better sound. It sounds great already but I wonder if it would be worth it to take the sub back out, stuff it, and reinstall before I secure the back seat. Any thoughts?

Message: Yeah, mine came with that stuff too. It's suppose to dampen the bass a bit so it doesn't sound like it's in a tunnel or whatever you want to call it. It goes inside the box along the walls (I use a little glue to keep it in place). I think it cleans up the bass a little when you listen to the difference. Whether or not it's worth it for you to take out the seat again... hmm, probably not. Since it's only an 8" and it's right behind the seat, you might not hear that much of a difference.
BTW, did you get that bolt in and tightened?

Message: Eric,
Not to interrupt...but usually people like to put stuffing into their sub boxes to minimize/cancel out any standing waves (bad for bass) and to artificially create more surface area so the speaker thinks it is in a bigger box. (this is generally regarded as a good thing)
Hope that helps. Can't really tell you if it is worth all the trouble to put it in, you might not even notice the difference.

Message: Thanks guys. TallQuad, I just have the seat on by the hooks- no bolts. I didn't have a chance to mess with it last night but I did go and buy some Poly-Fil. I'll go ahead and stuff the box Since I can just pull the seat back out and get to the sub- no biggie. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again.

Here's the dimensions:
H=13.5"
W=15.75"
Depth top=4.75"
Depth bottom=7"

Good luck!

Message: Hey Guys. I ordered the enclosure off of audio-n-more.com. The part # is QLT-.3508SI. The letters after the .3508 signify cosmetic differences. This box is the same dimensions. This is direct from Q-Logic:
Actually, the dimensions are literally identical. The "x" versus the "Bi" merely refers to some cosmetic differences.
Thanks for your interest in our products, and good luck upgrading your system. If you have any other questions, just let us know.

Jacob,
I had a question on the dimensions of a Q-Logic 8" sub enclosure that I
guess may be discontinued. I would like to see if a version that you
currently offer would be around the same size.
The part # that I have is QLT- .3508SBi
There is a guy over at DodgeDakotas.com that installed this in his truck and I would like to try the same as there are not very many options with the limited space in these Quad Cab trucks. Would you be able to give me the dimensions on this enclosure so I could tell if it would be comparable to, say, the QLT-.3508sx with dimensions of 15-1/2"w x 13-1/4"h x 6-3/4"
bottom depth x 4-1/2" top depth that you currently offer for a single 8" sub?

Message: Hey guys...quick question: I would love to put in this system you described above, but when I discussed it with some friends, and someone at the local Car Toys shop (mobile audio store) they expressed concerns of the rubber holding the speaker cone to the ring wearing off. I gather that in the process of making sound, the throw of the speaker will rub the rubber against the back seat, causing it to wear to the point of destroying it. Have any of you experienced this problem, or is the speaker far enough from the back of the seat so that this will not happen?

Message: someone mentioned the old battery trick...
to add to that, if you put the + side of the batt to the + side of the speaker (and the - to the -), it will push out towards you if your looking at it.
however, if the lines are crossed, and you put the + side of the battery to the - side of the speaker, and the - side of the battery to the + side of the speaker, it will pull in.
thats a quick wayt to tell if you have your wires crossed (it does make a difference).

I believe you can get a grill of some sort for the box that way it wont rub up against the back of the seat.
My question is, could I possibly fit a more powerfull sub? What is the limiting factor in an 8inch sub, the depth of it? I'd like to put in an HX2, would that fit in that box?
here are the dimensions:
Depth Bottom mount - 4.1875 in.
Cutout - 6.875 in.
Displacement - 86.4 cu in.

Message: My 8" sub worked fine behind the seat. The main problem is airflow... the seat covers the sound a lot but the speaker doesn't touch it at full volume.
Your biggest problem is airspace and depth. So you can fit a 10" or 12" IF you can get the correct cubic space needed or else it will still sound like crap. I'm going to design a box for 2 10's behind the 60 rear seat and see if that works.

Message: Hey guys, I have a 2000 QC that I bought brand new. After lot of thinking I decided to build a custom box that sits on the hump in the rear floorboard. I made it look like an extension from the front console between the driver and passenger seats. I installed a 10''Kicker solo-baric and had it firing down at the floor. I did leave about a 1/2 inch gap for speaker movement. I had a Punch amp pushing it with everything that it had and it still was not enough. The solo is a very power hungry speaker. It sounded great even with the factory system. This still leaves tons of room in the rear and you only loose leg room for a person in the middle. Let me know if you have any questions.

The Kicker Solo-baric can handle 600 watts or more but my amp is to small and it sucks every bit of its power. It is the perfect speaker for single speaker applications. I don't have any pictures available, just use your imagination. You do need to build the box to the correct air space of the speaker. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Message: Guys,
when in installed my sub in my quad cab i found an easier way of getting it behind the seat. what i did was i unbolted just the seatback. on each sides of the seat there is a torx screw at the pivot point. i removed these and the seatback slides right out. then i put the box in and reinstalled the seatback. it was much easier then trying to get those bottom bolts back in with the box in place. I had tried that at first and it seemed impossible or at least a real pain at the time. taking the sealback off made the install much easier. i put a jl audio 8" power wedge back there and it fit perfect.

Message: a few more issues...if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. I have a 2002 quadcab, currently I have an alpine mp3 deck and upgraded all the speakers (rf components and pioneer overiszed 6.5's). This combo sounds great but I really want some low end but not at the expense of tearing up the cab. It seems a few of you have been able to fit an enclosed 8 inch sub behind the driver's side rear seat, I found one I really like all the dimensions are similar to what I have seen except the width is 16.25, is that to long, I measured but it was hard to tell, pretty damn close, did any of you get exact measurement when you had the seat out? Another question I have is where could I possibly fit another amp? I was thinking behind the passenger's side rear seat but then the seat would'nt fold up preventing access to the jack (not that I know how to get it out at first glance anyways, damn thing seems to long to get out). Has anyone dealt with these same issues? If anyone has setup with two amps and a sub in a quad with minimal modification I would truly appreciate your help. Sorry for such a long post I've just never tried to build a system with such space restrictions

Message: Ian, i've got a 2002 4x4 quad cab. I've got 2 Illusion 8" subs in a box behind the passenger rear seat. The dimensions of this custom box are 24.5"W, 14.5H, 3.5"D(top), 6.5"D(bottom). Those are maximum dimensions. I had the jack taken out and it sits in a big toolbox in the bed under a tonneau cover. I dont use the factory jack anyway, its too complicated to put back together! So, the pass. rear seat does not fold up. All door speakers are JL Audio and the deck is factory for security reasons, if they dont see it they dont steal it. The speakers/subs are powered by the JL 500/5. The 500/5 is located behind the driver side rear seat. That also does not fold up any longer. Both the amp and box are perfect fits. Seats are fully bolted in place. The only issue is that neither side of the rear seats fold up. But, that is a non issue for me. Despite the space constraints the system does an excellent job, although I would prefer a W7 powered by the 1000/1! I guess i just gotta get a bigger truck, (Ford F350....yeah.) I'll get the company to write it off as a business expense! Let me know if this info helps.
