Message: If you don't like the prices/whatever at the dealer, go to the farhquing auto parts store and buy a damned Chilton. $20. Go to crutchfield or your favourite local boomtown and purchase a deck. $50 - $300. Buy some basic hand tools from Sears - get Craftsman (if they break, free replacement for life - you gotta like that, and they're less expensive than mac and snap-on). Maybe $15 for a couple of screwdrivers and a 10mm wrench.
Do the work your own damned self and save money: PRICELESS.
If you don't like the dealer scamming you, well DUH, don't go to the dealer. I have purchased ***TWO*** parts from the dealer, because they were the ***ONLY*** source for these parts new. I spent $12 on an airduct for my 3.0 intake and about $15 for a preformed piece of rubber hose (yes, /that/ *was* too much). Everything else I've gotten from junkerz or Advance/Discount, and occasionally NAPA.
My God, man, this is nothing. Remember that plastic oatmeal-can-sized toy that was blue with a red lid and had the little yellow plastic "blocks" in different shapes? You know, fit the shapes into the right holes? Well, this is no more complicated! Unsrew this, unscrew that, pull item out, disconnect wires... attach adapter, connect adapter to new deck, install deck, turn screws.
So farhquing easy I was doing it at 12 years of age! If you want to complain about the dealership conning you out of money, learn to farhquing do it your own damned self and quit whining about it. Everyone knows the dealers are the most expensive place to get work done. Regardless of who you take it to, you'll have to wait for it to be done, or leave your car there. If you do it yourself, you still have to wait for it to be done, so you're not losing any time - in fact, you save the time it takes to get to and from the repair shop AND you don't have to worry about leaving your car there.
I'm not saying anyone can rebuild an engine and transmission in their garage (I did, works fine), but it's **NOT** that complicated so long as you follow the directions. A car stereo for that matter is nothing, tune-ups are nothing, oil changes are no more complicated than cleaning a fishtank!
What the OP is doing is FRAUD and IT IS ILLEGAL. I would pray to God that he got busted if it hadn't been over a year ago. I can understand him not wanting to spend $300 for a factory replacement. In that case, go to the junkyard and pull one yourself for only $20 + $2 entrance fee. Damn, and it's LEGAL, and you can get the proper speakers, too, not to mention any extra amp. Okay, the complete system might run you around $40 but it's a hell of a lot better than spending the evening with a cellmate named "Butch" or "Spike".
