Subject: Help!!! Need to ground my head unit! IP: Logged
Message: I have a '99 dak that came with a cd changer and tape player head unit. I pulled that crap out and hooked up my blaupunkt unit. I have a ground wire coming from the blaupunkt head that needs a home. In my last car, the harness had a ground in it but now I don't know what to do with it. It's a short wire and I don't see any good place to ground. I turned the unit on and it works fine but i'm concerned about that ground. Any advice?

Message: Ground it on the grounding wire for the stock headunit. If the wire id not long enough get a strand of speaker wire and use it as a connector between the two.

Message: You can always just plug your antena in and its a ground in itself.. or xtend the ground wire from the deck to a wire that you know if a ground.. or find the ground wire yourself and plug it up into it..

Message: Or just find a metal piece of dashboard down in there somewhere and make a new ground for it. Use a disconnect terminal in the middle of the new wire to facilitate removal. Use a ring terminal and a self-tapping screw to put the ground on to the metal.

Message: I ended up loosening a bolt on the steering column and grounding to that. Is that ok?

Message: Should be fine. any point on the truck is ground, My understanding is that the entire truck is one big ground to itself so when it is manufactured they only have to run the positive side to complete the circut. Any of those wires through out the truck that are just attached with a screw to sheet metal are grounds. I used one just under the carpet below the stereo that had several other grounds attached to it. some one correct me if I am wrong but this was my understanding.

Message: Yep, pretty much.....
There are cables that come off the neg terminal of the battery; one of the goes to a body ground. This is why you can hook up an amp without having to run that 4-guage ground wire all the way back to the battery. Just make sure you don't have a "hot" lead and get sparky (:p).
