Subject: Is This Enough Power?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport Regular Cab and I am putting together my new system.

I just bought an Eclipse 32440 - 4 channel Amplifier and I want it to power my new system; Eclipse 8062 Component Set and two JL Audio 10W1 subwoofers in sealed wedge truck boxes.

Eclipse 32440 - 4 channel Amplifer Specs:
(800 watt MAX)
200W x 4 Channel Max. Power Output at 2 Stereo
120W x 4 Channel 0.1% THD at 2 Stereo, 20-20,000Hz@13.8V (RMS Continuous Power)
85W x 4 Channel 0.1% THD at 4 Stereo, 20-20,000Hz@13.8V (RMS Continuous Power)

Eclipse 8062 Component Set Specs:
Continuous Power Handling: 85W
Music Power Handling: 170W
Frequency Response: 50Hz-22kHz, ± 3dB

Will I have enough power from my amp to power both my component set and subs? How should I set up the amp; two front channels for component set and the other two channels for the subs? How would you suggest? And is it enough power? I'm just looking for Sound Quality not SPL.

Thanks for the help.

If the subs are 4 ohm then you really only have one choice, which is to power each speaker with it's own channel. I don't think that amp can be bridged to a 2ohm load. 85 watts to each sub will sound pretty good but it may not produce any mind numbing spl numbers. So I think it will work for you just fine. If the subs are 8ohm then you may want to bridge channels 3 and 4 of the amp for more power.

Like R/T said... it depends on the ohms of those subs.

I haven't bought the subs yet, what ohm rating will let me give them the most power? JL Audio 10w-1's come in 4,6,or 8 ohm.

8ohm would be best, then you can parallel them to a 4ohm load and bridge the last two channels of the amp onto that, and that would essentially be the exact same as running a 2ohm sub per channel, which would be giving them 120watts each with the engine running.

If you get them each 4ohm you will need to run one per channel (not bridged, each of them seperate from the other) which would yield only 85 each, so 8ohm in this case is your best route.

As for the components, just be careful with the gains on that amp. Keep them really low for the front two channels--with them being underpowered you don't want the amp clipping because a square-wave would really hurt your components' feelings when they aren't getting much power as it is. I mean, the will sound fine that way, but don't crank up the gains under the (very common) misunderstanding that the gain knob is a volume knob. Try and keep the gains below 1/4, and if you don't have enough power, look into a line driver (will boost the voltage goin to the amp, thus giving more output/volume while still having your gains low and thus having a good clear wave going to the speakers, thus keeping them safe, your bank account more full, and you happier)

Err, let me reword the end of that post (since I can't edit it)

Try and keep the gains below 1/4, and if you don't have enough VOLUME from the front (or subs) channel, look into a line driver (will boost the voltage goin to the amp, thus giving more output/volume while still being able to have your gains low which means having a good clear wave going to the speakers, thus keeping them safe, your bank account more full, and you happier)

I `ve had all the power wires ran into my trunk waitin for an amp and i already got two 10" pioneers in a sealed bandpass box with plexiglass and this bitch jus won`t work. I got my power and negative cable hooked good and my remote cable and the power comes on and it works in my frined`s truck but in my car i can hear music but very little. Any ya`all know what the deal is? Let me know, i`m not experienced at this.
