Subject: Bypassing Factory Infinity Amp IP: Logged
Message: About a year ago I put in a Pioneer 9300 head unit in my 01 Quad with Infinity, and I want to bypass the factory amp all together. The deck is the top of the line pioneer with screen savers, and the works, but that 50 watts is running through the factory harness into the amp, and it's not neccesary to be doubling my wattage like that. I believe sound quality would be much improved if I bypassed the factory amp all together. Problem is, I don't know where it is.
Also, I know space in a Quad has been a problem for many, but I have put a 5.6" TFT display, DVD player, CB radio, and a 12" sub in my truck, and not really given up any space. Anyone looking for more room, I may can help with some ideas.

Message: Unfortunately. they do not make a harness for it. you have to hardwire it. the big connector closest to the firewall is the speaker ones. you'll know the 4 pairs by the color and matching color with a stripe. get a 9-volt battery and hook up both those wire's in each pair to knock the speaker abit and it will tell you which one its connected to. you'll have to run wires from your stereo down to the infinity amp. Sucks but I had to do it too.

Message: I had an idea. I also have the infinity system, in a 2002 quad cab. I am planning on getting a new face and wanted to use the factory amp(and the 4 channels) to power the four speakers in the back, and use the new face to power the components in the front. Would it be possible to wire two channels seperately to the tweeters in the front from the face and two channels to the front 6.5's from the face also? I hope this is clear enough any input would be useful, thanks.

Message: Yea, more than likely. but you'll still have to hardwire. and its gonna be a interesting balanceing act for front-back

Message: Thanks for all the responses on the location. Yes you could split the channels up that way if you wanted to. But it would take you a while to track down all the right wires. When I have to hard wire something like that I usually write some kind of chart with the colors on a piece of paper before I start cutting.

Message: If you didn't make much of difference then the factory amp may have some sort auto switch for high input signals, or I was thinking maybe the amp doesn't boost the watts very much,(just keeps the load low from having the extra speakers in the truck. ?

Message: Is it really that hard, and worth it to bypass the factory amp. I own a 98 club cab dakota. I have taken a look at the amp and noticed that there are more wires on the harness closest to the fire wall then on the harness fearthest from it. What are the extra wires? Can the factory amp, after be disabled, be used for anything else?
Thank you

Message: No, it's not the Motorola box...don't touch that one. The Motorola box should be under the driver's side kick panel...the Infinity amp is under the passenger side kick panel...at least that is the way it is on the Dakotas with the Infinity sound system.
The wires on the harness closest to the fire wall are outputs to the speakers...the wires on the smaller connector (closest to the passenger seat) are the outputs from the head unit that feed the signal to the amplifier.

Message: I just bought the truck used last week and had a bad crackling in the rear door speakers. The front doors and tweeters were not working at all. There is a aftermarket Kenwood CD player in there and the wiring was done with wire nuts....nice (idiot). But anyway, I just cut the connectors off of the factory amp and hardwired the speaker wires together. I wanted to see if the crackling was the amp or if the speakers were blown. It still crackles, speakers must be shot. I want a new CD player too, Kenwoods are junk. Just figured I'd throw in my findings. But yea the factory amp and wiring is under the passenger side kick panel.
