Subject: Subwoofer Amp Install Help
IP: Logged

Message:
Im installing a single 10 in my dakota. Im gonna us a 2 channel amp and bridge the speaker outputs to use it as a sub amp. My deck has both front and rear RCA pre-outs. Do I just use the left side of the rear pre-out into the left input of the 2 channel amp or do I hook up both the left and right to the amp. Thanks

What you want to do is hook up the rear preouts to the amp. You want to do this in stereo (right and left sides). If you're feeling adventurous and have enough room behind the dash, I would recommend getting a combining patch cable and running the right front/right rear on the right side out and the left front/left rear on the left side out. Doing this would ensure that even if the pan & balance on the music changes in 4 directions there is a signal to the subwoofer. When you hook the speaker to the amp, hook the positive wire to one channel's positive terminal and the negative wire to the other channel's negative terminal (unless it has a bridged output connection on the amp).

Matt.. some 3 sub system use 6ohm drivers or dvc drivers..used properly with the right amps you can get 2 ohm load or 1ohm(if your amp can handle it)

Mike..do you have the 12v remote hooked up to turn the amp on? most amps need this to trigger to turn on? Check the see if the amp is on(lights up)? I'd also use the rear only from the deck that way you can control the sub volume..more for dance/rap/ and less for rock or however you like. Some amps when bridge mono like to see both left and right inputs..try both see how it sounds
You also did not mention the brand or model# of your amp. does it have a cross over so only the low frequency is being sent to your sub.

the extra wire coming out of the converter is a groundto be used ONLY if you have noise...

you need to run a remote turn on lead.

anybody outthere that has the experience might be able to xplain this? there is a power acoustik 820watt amp-(mosfet, bridgeable,crossover,hpf/lpf, bass boost 2 ohm stable. The woofer is a JVC 4 ohm 1000 watt max. with this type of material what would be the correct install and why? And if you would use both of the voice coils or just one, considering the amp is bridgeable.

Terry,

If your subwoofer has any literature or owner's manual with it it might list the best type of enclosure to use, sealed or ported. It should also list the recommended airspace volume for the enclosure. If you have no manual or info on the speaker, you might try the JVC website and email them for information. Or a better way would be to see if you can find a stereo store that either sells or is familiar with your subwoofer. If you have the room in your truck cab, a ported enclosure will give more output at the tuned frequency, but the frequency response band tends to be much more narrow than a sealed enclosure. This tends to perform better with most rap or bass-heavy music. Generally, a sealed enclosure will provide a tighter, more musical low end, especially for rock or country music. Ask around at a few stereo shops for ideas.

With a dual voice coil sub, you must use both voice coils or the output will not be good. If the voice coils are 8ohm, wire them in parallel and bridge the amp's output to the sub for a 2 ohm load to get the most power from the amp. If you have 4ohm voice coils, the safest way is to wire them in series and present that to the amp's bridged output for a 4 ohm load. This way wouldn't be as loud as 2 ohm mono but would be safer for the amplifier. Wiring two 4 ohm voice coils in parallel to the bridged output would present a half ohm load to the amp, which could make it run very hot, shut down and possibly cause internal damage to the amp. How you wire the sub to the amp will depend on the impedance of the voice coils. A good stereo shop will be able to advise you how best to wire your amp & sub.

With that much power, you might also consider a stiffening capacitor for the power supply to the amp. It would help the system sound better and avoid problems like dimming headlights when the sound is turned up loud. It would be very helpful if there are other amplifiers in your system.

one would sound better. Whats the RMS wattage on the amp?
make sure that it is above the nominal power on your sub and
you'll be fine.
