Subject: What Amp Should I Get?

Message:
I have a 97' Dakota Regular Cab and I want to upgrade the speakers. The fronts are going to be Eclipse 8062 Component Set, Rears will be some Eclipse Coaxial powered by my Alpine 7876 head unit.

What amp should I use to power the Component set? Brands and how many watts?

Eclipse CS Specs:
Continuous Power Handling: 85W
Music Power Handling: 170W
Frequency Response: 50Hz-22kHz, ± 3dB

I like the looks of the JL Audio amps and the Orion Xtreme amps, but I think they are too powerful. No offense to any out there, but I do not like the looks of the RF amps.

I would go with the Alpine MRV-340 4 Channel amplifier which would match the specs of your components speakers plus it would take advantage some the features your Alpine Head unit has. It will also be able to handle an 8" maybe a 10" subwoofer if you decide to add one in the future. Because of the limited amount of space there is in a regular cab I went with MRP-F320 5 channel amp to power up my system. I have a JVC KD-S620 CD player, 2 sets of Polk Audio Coaxials EX365 up front and EX352 in the rear and a single 8 inch JL W3 subwoofer on a sealed truck box. So far I'm pleased with the results. I'm saving up for new head unit that has a built in EQ.

Any Alpine amp is good... my friend has a 130 watt Alpine amp that pushes two 12' Sony X-plodes that are 650 watts each. Don't ask me how he does it but it works good and it's loud as crap. The way I see it,.. Buy an Alpine amp cause you can turn the wattage down to make your smaller speakers work great, and then later on you can add 12's haha

You should check out Audiobahn. Their amps are pretty well priced, look cool, and have built in fans. Almost forgot, best part is their size. If mounting height under your seat is an issue most of their amps are 2" high.

I have the 300/4 JL amp and it's not to strong for your speakers. Mine is pusing the JL audio 3-way components and a pair of Kove coaxials. Sounds excellent.

Keep in mind that because a speaker is rated 650, it can still run on 5 watts if you want it to, the rating is just what they don't recommend you exceed by much, so it shouldn't be a shock that someone can run a pair of 12's on 130 watts.

Not to undermine your judgement there, but Audiobahn is one of THE most overpriced brands in the industry--even more so than RF equipment. For the amount of money an audiobahn amp costs I could get an Arc and have damn good build quality--unless you are just really taken by the chrome on the audiobahn :)

I don't know where you shop for your amps, but I got my Audiobahn 4 chan. amp with 50 watts RMS for $192. I thought it was pretty reasonable.

A good 50-75 watts should be good for those comps.

As far as brands go, Arc, Zapco, Phoenix Gold,Helix, US amps and the JL amp you mentioned would also be an excellent choice.
