Subject: Factory Infinity System
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm getting ready to buy a 2001 or 2002 Quad Cab and can't decide whether to get the Infinity speaker option or just upgrade it after I get it. Where are the Subs and the amp located? How much power does the amp push. Would anyone recommend getting the factory system? Or is it best to do it yourself?

I have never - ever - ever heard anything good about the infinity system. A lot of people say it is a waste of good money. You can make your system sound so much better for about the same amount of money when you go with aftermarket components. Someone please back me up on this.

For a factory system the Infinity setup is not bad. I'm sure with the right combination of aftermarket parts you could probaby do better though.

My advice .... go sit in a truck with the Infinity setup and give it the once over. That's the only way you'll know if you'd like it or not!

OK, here's something good about the factory system.......

It allows me to have steering-wheel controls - a feature I've found I can't live without - as well as CD AND cassette. Of course, the head unit is all that's left of the factory system NOW. I replaced all the speakers with Kappas, added a Thunderform sub box, two Profile amps, and a Kenwood EQ.

Yeah, I spent too much for the factory system, but I've got the controls, and everything else is hidden, so it still LOOKS stock.

Get the infinity system, well worth it. Drop the head unit. Cool thing about this system is the built in amp is compatible with higher power head units. Just a set of JL 12's, and your set. Where? I've got an 01' CC. I had two custom built pyramid boxes that reside in the corners of the back bench seat. This way at least two small / or one fat person can still get back there. I have set up so the subs face towards the front in crossing paths. Sweet.

What do you expect to hear. The Infinity system is better than your average OEM stereo setup, but it in no way compares to what you can purchase aftermarket for the same loot.

It depends a lot on how sophisticated a listener you are. Do you REALLY ENJOY your music? If so, don't get the factory system.

As far as keeping the steering wheel controls, thats an easily corrected problem. There are manufacturers that make a harness to interface them with aftermarket receivers. Or you can just buy a receiver with a remote.

Blizzard is right!!! Go listen to one and see if it suits your ears.

Gross I ripped it all out as soon as I could. I also notice for QC every one gets thuner forms becuase they come to fit. I would have a box bulit for there and Try somthing diffrent . I don't care for the Infinity system. Sound quality is not bad, however the door speakers are mid-woofers and they can't handle the bass that gets pushed to them. I regularly have to turn the bass down -3 to -6 in order to quell distortion.

The Infinity system is okay, but I think it's way overpriced for what you get. The only reason I have it is because it was in the truck I wanted and I negotiated really hard on the price, so I didn't really pay MSRP for it anyway. If I were ordering a truck or was trying to choose between two that I liked, I'd definitely skip it.

And pays anything except what he should be paying, which is only the INVOICE price fro the truck and ALL the options, and not a penny more!

You know, the salemans LOVE it when guys like this come in and buy. The take hours, knocking a fes hundred off here of there, and really think they got a deal! When the salesman are all laughing and high fiving, cause you paid over invoice price, yep, one born every minute!

You're pretty quick to judge considering I didn't mention anywhere what I paid for my truck. The fact of the matter is, I do consulting work for the dealership and know the sales managers personally. If you think invoice is the lowest price you can get, you've got a lot to learn about the car business. Ever heard of holdback? Do you know how to read the invoice? You probably don't even know where to look for the REAL dealer price, so don't go making assumptions that you're smarter than every other truck buyer out there.

Yep.

You can, but be aware that the amplifier is EQed for the factory speakers.

Jim I don't know what system you have in your truck BUT my "97 infinity system pushes out 65 watts X 4 channels driving a total of 6 speakers according to the dealer's advertising broucher that I saved and the window sticker that came on the truck when I bought it. The 2 tweeters in the front doors are driven off the same channel as the lower, bigger speakers in the front door. There is only a single capacitor on each tweeter being used as a "high pass crossover" so it is a rather limited system. Infinity sells a 3 way speaker that comes complete with a full 3 way crossover called a 63.5i that is a direct replacement that sounds much better then the stock speakers ever could. The 30 watt system is used in the non-infinity vehicles. The Infinity radio head has a seven range frequency equalizer so your comment about the amplifier being EQ'd for the factory speakers is really moot as the system can be easily adjusted for aftermarket speakers at the head.

gabe try www.infinitysystems.com the aftermarket speakers they sell are far supier to what D/C put in your truck. www.hookedontronics.com currently has infinity 3 way speakers on sale. The 635.i rated for 75 watts continuois 225 peak power is available for 108 bucks plus shipping. The sound just blows away what ya got stock. With the amp in your truck kickin out 65 watts and the speakers able to handle 75 you have a margine of error and a bit of servivability, plus infinity's are one of the very few that come with a 3 year warranty verses most others with only a 1 year.

The non-Infinity system (head unit powered) puts out 14 watts per channel.

"The Infinity radio head has a seven range frequency equalizer"

The most I've seen on a factory head unit was five sliders on RBC and RAY/RBN radios. Everything else has two or three.

"your comment about the amplifier being EQ'd for the factory speakers is really moot"

Oh really? Since when can I adjust the center frequency and Q of the radio's EQ sliders?

wrong Jim Z the papers all say RMS power which is continuous power NOT peak. My truck has the original factory head on it and it has seven controllers, I have no idea what you are talking about. and they sure do a GOOD job of making it sound the way I want it too.I put a meter on my son's Intrepid non infinity system when he was shopping for speaker upgrades and it showed a continuous power out put of slightly less then 31 watts so I once again have no idea what you are talking about. I have seen the factory amp and find absolutely NO WAY to adjust it for center frequency and the two top install shops in town have no idea what you mean by Q, so once again you have no idea of what you are talking about. by the way just because you only "measured" 2002 and 2003 systems does not mean that my "97 is equal to them.

"wrong Jim Z the papers all say RMS power which is continuous power NOT peak."

I have a Mopar catalog right here. The head units offered all state "66 watts total power at 3% THD". That's 66 watts _divided_ by four channels.

I also know what amp IC the radios use, and they are in no way capable of 31 watts RMS per channel.

"I have seen the factory amp and find absolutely NO WAY to adjust it for center frequency"

Good, because I was talking about the _head unit_, not the amp.

"and the two top install shops in town have no idea what you mean by Q,"

Q= effective width of an EQ filter. Find a more knowledgeable install shop.

" so once again you have no idea of what you are talking about."

?

That's absurd logic. Your install shops never heard of it, so I don't know what I'm talking about? Maybe you should do some reading: http://www.recordingeq.com/EQ/req0900/primer.htm
