It probably involves taking half the dash apart so you can get to the bolts that hold it in there. I think mine is a little different then yours but on mine you had to start by the headlight switch and work your way over to the stereo. Remove all screws, unplug the wire harness for the headlights, and pop out some panels to expose the stereo.

You'll need to first pull off the dash surround. There are no screws, but rather a series of metal tabs that hold everything in place. Start on the right side and gently, but firmly pull a small section at a time until you loosen up the whole dash face. You might have to work it while pulling up because some of the tabs might get caught on the instrument cluster, radio and headlight switch.
Once the dash is off, take a 10mm socket and undo the four bolts holding the stereo in place. Then pull it out and unplug the wiring harness and antenna.
To install the new head unit, you'll need a wiring harness adapter (available from Circuit City) and an adapter plate if you're going with a single Din unit. The installation is a reverse of the removal once all the wiring is connected.
Here's some pics of how the dash comes off. You have the '99 so you won't have any problems with the headlight switch as in the '97's.

If your dash looks the same as the one above (minus the '97 only headlight switch) then yes it would be the same. I believe the design change wasn't until 2001. But double check on the wiring harness though when you pick it up (be sure that they don't have one specifically for '00)

i took out my tape deck to install a cd player in my 99 dakota sport. went to wire it up and everything but the wire colors in the wiring harness are different then the ones off the back of the new deck. can someone help me figure out which wire goes to which?

Go to Walmart and get an $8 stereo adapter harness for the truck, makes it realy easy to install.

It states the year and model on the package. I think my 00 DAk (same harness as your 99) used a pre-2002 Chrysler/Dodge harness. Checker, AutoZone, PepBoys should also have the harnesses.
