Subject: Speaker Install IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
I was wondering for those of you who have replaced your stock speakers, did you use the factory basket when you mounted the new speakers? I did with my Kappa's and I think that is the reason they have no low end. I had to modify the basket by drilling new holes for the mounting screws on the speaker end, however I did not seal them to the basket in anyway like the factory ones. The speakers want to produce bass, but it sounds all nasally and stuff. Just not a good sound and I think it is due to that plastic basket. I can't mount the speakers directly to the door because there is not enough clearance with the window. I was just curious about some tips and tricks for speaker installs. Thanks!

Message: You can use 3/4" Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and use the OE factory basket as a template and make your own speaker mounting plates. You can mark and drill out the 3 screw holes from the OE plastic bracket and then cut out the right size hole for your Kappas and mount the new speakers that way. MDF will seal to the door better than plastic and will not resonate. You can use 1/2" MDF for the rear speakers. Much better than plastic.
Also make sure you have the new speakers wired in phase correctly. That is to say, the positive and negative outputs from the radio or amplifier are connected to their respective positive and negative terminals on the Kappas. A speaker that is wired out of phase will not have any bass response. You can test the phase by moving the balance control on the radio completely to the left and then completely to the right. If the bass response improves with the balance all the way to one side and then the other but the bass drops out when the balance is centered, the speakers are definitely wired out of phase.
If you still have the plastic wiring connectors on the old OE speakers, strip the wires and connect each one to the 2 terminals on a 9 volt battery. When you have positive to positive and negative to negative the speaker cone will push out away from the basket. Then see which wire color is positive and negative and determine the polarity at the connections on the new speakers that way.
