I know this isn't exacly a "custom" question, but I was wanting to replace my stock 2001 dakota cassette/radio with a stock 2001 cassette/cd/radio. All that turns up on my searches are for 2002-2004. Will that fit the 2001, or is there no stock radio/cassette/cd for the 2001?

Dodge did offer the radio/cassette/cd unit as an option for 2001. As long as the one you are looking at purchasing has the rounded corners and 4 screw holes to mount it in the dash it will work fine.

The question is whether the plug for the power and speaker connections is the same. In 01 and 02 there are 2 plugs and a standard Motorola-style antenna jack. In 03 they changed over to a single connector plug and a round European style antenna connector. It would be best to find the unit out of an 01 or an 02 so the connectors would be the same. If you have to use a unit from an 03 or 04, there are matching wire harness plugs and antenna adapters you can buy at any good car audio shop or at Best Buy so it will work in your 01. It wouldn't be very difficult to do, either but you would need the corresponding harnesses to convert it over.

You may know already but it doesn't have to be a unit from a Dodge or even a Dakota for that matter. The rounded-corner unit from Jeeps and Chryslers from those year models will work too. They have the same style connections in the back of the radio. It might have a Chrysler or Jeep logo on the radio, but if that doesn't bother you it would work fine.

If you can find a unit for a good price, it should work out with no problems. Let us know how it turns out.

Jimmy

Two years ago I did what you are asking about... The 2001 radios are sort of an anomaly - they function on the PCI bus, have the rounded corners, but still have the 2 x 7 pin connectors as the older years have.

To get a 2002 - 2004 Dakota or Jeep radio you can do it but have to buy OEM part# 8220-7541. This is a connector kit that will adapt a 22 pin radio (2002+) to vehicles using the 2 x 7 pin connectors.

If I remember right, the kit cost under $25. I used it to install a 2002 RAZ radio (OEM part# 56038-555AH) in place of my 2001 RAZ radio. (The 2002 RAZ has RDS, and CD-changer controls, which the 2001 RAZ lacks.)

The kit comes with an antenna adapter, and will continue to work with the steering wheel controls if you have them.

What's your left foot doing?

Hey guys, I received the new radio and installed it, no problem. The one I bought matched the 2 7 pin connectors exactly....so it was pretty simple. Works like a charm, and for 50 bucks sounds great! Thanks again for the input.
