Subject: Replacing Factory Infinity Amp IP: Logged
Message: I want to replace the factory Infinity amp in my 2000 Dakota. has anyone replaced theirs before and can tell me what will fit in the same space and what size it is?
Also, does anyone know where the crossovers are located for the door component speakers? Probably want to replace them too if they are on the same quality level as the speakers were,ie,crap.

Message: The factory amp is mounted in the passenger side kick panel. It's not very big, maybe 6"x8" and about an inch thick if I remember it right. I don't know if there are any aftermarket amps made that size nowadays, but there isn't much room in the kick panel for an amp much bigger than that. There are other locations you can mount an amp in your truck though. On the back wall if you have a single cab, under the seat or even mount to the floor just behind the front seats in an extended cab. I removed the rear seat bottom from behind the driver's side of my 2001 CC and cut a piece of 1/2" mdf to fit in that part of the tool tray and screwed it down to the inside edges of the tray. I first covered the mdf with matching dark gray carpet. I built a sealed enclosure for a single 10" JL Audio 10W 0 sub and mounted that to one side of the board, centered behind the armrest. The other side of the board had plenty of room to mount my JL 300/4 amp. I recently added another amp and built a similar carpeted platform over the top of the 300/4. Both amps work great and have had no problems at all with overheating. I am too tall for anyone to have been able to sit behind my seat anyway, so the space is not really missed. You just have to find the size of the amp you want to use and look for a good place or a creative way to mount it.
There are no crossovers on the OE Infinity midrange/woofers. They naturally roll off at some unknown high frequency. You will find a small capacitor either inline on the wires for the tweeter or sometimes it is soldered directly to the terminal the tweeter. That is all the crossover you will find in your Dakota. If you buy a good set of aftermarket separate component speakers they will have their own dedicated crossover networks. A lot of people will mount the crossover somewhere in the door, but that is not a very good place for it. They might fit up behind the dash or even behind the radio, in the kickpanels or under a seat. I put mine in the tool tray underneath the board I put in to hold my amp and subwoofer enclosure. They have been there almost 3 years now and I have not had a single problem with them.
Hope this helps.

Message: Yeah I saw the resistor on the rear speakers, but couldnt see anything involved with the front components, maybe hidden somewhere out of view.
As for the amp,i saw i tucked away inside the pass kick panel when i had that off,saw the bottom of the amp but couldnt tell what size it was because most of it was hidden. Probably not big enough space there for my 4-ch amp,so I'm going to put it under the pass seat, plenty room there. The amp for the sub will be inside the box that I am building to fit under the jump seat.
