Subject: Using "Internet" XM in your Dak... IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone tried to use the cellular internet to get internet radio in their ride?
Lately I've been using my Palm Treo tethered to my CARputer (in dash VGA tied to mini computer system) and with the high speed internet I can use SHOUTcast.com to stream high quality internet radio stations. I'm kinda hooked on it. There are like 27,000 total stations. So it blows XM away. nAnd it's free (excluding your cell data plan).
The only bad thing is that it will occasionally disconnect from the internet when I drive around. And seems worse in the congested areas of Phoenix yet will work almost better in the outskirts. (Have had it stay connected for an hour straight half way in between Phoenix and Tucson). I think I'm going to add an external cell antenna to reduce the internet disconnecting.
I was wondering if anyone else has done this.
It's kinda sweet. I'll get some pics/video this weekend if I get a chance. :)

Message: You like that sh*t eh? :)
Bad news is I was upgrading the PC in the Dak to Vista. And didn;t want to sit in the truck anymore when I was trying to figure an issue out, so I tried to remove the motherboard. ... Well it was only secured with corktape I use for HVAC stuff. Well after 2+ years that stuff was really STUCK in there! As I slowly pulled the motherboard off of the sticky sh*t, it musta flexed the board too much. Because it quit working!
Tonight I bought a used motherboard from someone on craigslist for $40 for temp use. It is actually only an inch bigger than the micro-ITX I had before, so maybe I can just keep it in there as is. Won't know until tomorrow when I try to install it into the truck's console.
I'm installing Vista onto it now and the programs to get it all ready.
I'll take some new pics/video soon.

Message: Upgrade to Vista? Was the old OS broken? Or you wanted the newest gadget? ;-) I hate it when simple things turn sour.

Message: I just wanted to put Vista on it. Vista is kinda cool once you learn how to tweek it a bit. Plus the Windows Mobile Device Center works well with my Palm Treo SmartPhone.
That temp motherboard is up and running. I had to shoehorm it into the console. No room to put the DVD rom back in. But I rarely used it.
It has a few glitches occasionally but sounds really good again when it's working.
Today I drove Tucson again. Using my Palm 700wx plugged into my laptop in my work van I can use the internet all the way from Phoenix to Tucson. Out in the middle of the boonies I can't get my FM radio stations, but the internet/celltowers seem to have service the entire 2 hour drive!
It works pretty good with a few hickups in the streaming audio every now and then. Once I stopped using PDAnet to tether my phone to the laptop it starting working better.
