Subject: Pioneer Head Units IP: Logged
Message: I just picked up a Pioneer Premier head unit, model DEH-P490IB. Has a remote and a cord for an IPOD included with it. Price was $190.00. Does anyone here have or has had this unit? How did it work out and did you have any problems with it? This unit is replacing an older Alpine.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Message: I used to always like Pioneer until it started to either not take the C.D. or not give it back.

Message: I guess all cd players will sooner or later have some kind of problem. I have used Alpine for a very long time, and only recently began downloading songs off the internet and burning them on CD's. They don't sound very good on the Alpine, because of how the files are compressed is what the sales guy said. But this Pioneer unit is supposed to be able to compensate for it. It sounded good in the store but I am still debating whether to keep it.
Thanks

Message: I have a Pioneer DEH-7800MP. This HU plays MP3 CD's great, even at lower bitrates. That's about all I listen to now. I can put a band's entire discography on one CD! It was expensive but worth every penny. I've had 3 Pioneer HU's in my life. Two of them are still playing, and one I just retired, it still works though. I've had several different brands (all high-end models), and the Pioneer's have by far been the best.

Message: Thanks for the info Hollis. I decided to return that unit so I can shop around and compare the different Pioneer units. The one I got was the only one they had at the store and I thought better of it after looking at Pioneer on a few websites. I might still get one but not sure on the model yet. I'll take a look at the 7800MP.
Thanks

Message: The 7800MP was last year's model. I think they have the 7900BT now, which is the exact same, just with Bluetooth. You won't be dissappointed if you get this one. I also have 2 Pioneer amps running all Boston Acoustics fronts, rears, and subs. It is unbelievable.

Message: I just replaced an older Pioneer HU with a DEH-690. The 690/6900 are USB enabled which makes connection to an iPod, most MP3 players, USB memory sticks, and USB disks possible.
I use either a memory stick or a USB disk and it works great. The directory firmware is a bit clumbsy, but overall it's great. I haven't put a CD in the drive yet, except to test that it works.

Message: Took a look at some Pioneer units at Circuit City tonight after work. They are nice units no doubt, but I am still undecided. I'm still looking/shopping..

Message: I don't think Circuit City carries the high end models. Compare features vs. price. Consider your priorities: Are you a real audiophile or just a casual listener? Do you care more about audio features or asthetics(high definition display)? Are you interested in Satellite Radio ready models? HD Radio capable models? Need to hook up your IPOD directly? Do you download/burn MP3's to CD?
Answer these questions then go to the websites of the brands you are interested in. Do your homework before you buy.

Message: Have decided to just keep my Alpine head unit. After looking at the Pioneer units they are just too busy for me. That big ole volume knob controls way too many functions by itself. They had a lot of features but seemed to me to be too complicated to use while driving, even with a remote control. There is nothing wrong with my Alpine, and it makes sense just to keep it. I don't own an Ipod, I doubt I'll have XM Radio in my Dakota and between my Alpine unit and with the Clarion eq I have I can tweak the sound on the songs I have burned on CD from the Internet.
Thanks for the info here.
