Subject: deck installation IP: Logged
Message: I'm considering installing an aftermarket deck into my 97 quad cab (has the basic tape deck), and would like to know if there is anything special/difficult that needs to be done for the installation. I haven't picked out a particular deck but I'm looking at something less than $200 with CD-RW MP3 playback if this helps (any suggestions are welcome). I know i'll need a trim ring so any sources for that would be appreciated. also, if there are any other parts needed or that are helpful(wiring harnesses, etc.) I would appreciate sources for them too.

Message: Your Dakota will need an installation kit to mount the new deck to the dash and a wire harness to match the new deck wiring to the radio harnesses in the truck. Both can be bought at any good car audio shop or at Best Buy or Circuit City. Together they should cost around $25 to maybe $30.
As far as deck recommendations, I think Alpine makes some good entry level units with mp3 cdr/w capabilities. There are other good brands available as well, but I am partial to Alpine. Have used them for a very long time, since the 1980's. With car decks nowadays you can get a lot for your money. Check them out at car audio stores or at Circuit or Best Buy and get the one you like that fits your budget. The main thing to look for is ease of operation, especially while driving. A lot of decks now even have wireless remote controls.
Your truck is very easy to install a new radio. Most installation kits will have instructions on removing the OE unit and installing the new one. And the wiring harness will match the new deck's harness by the color of the wires. Best Buy very often runs sales with free installation, and any good independent car audio store will have installation available too.
Shop around and get the one you like. Installation is easy in a 98. Have fun with it.
