Subject: RBK CD Connections IP: Logged
Message: I have an RBK CD stereo out of an '01 Dakota Quad cab.
I pulled this unit out and installed an Alpine head unit with Ipod connector. I used a harness connector so installation was a snap. Everything turns on, lights up and seems to work, except the actual sound. Kind of important I think.
The question I have is, there was an extra wire going into the original unit that was not part of the two conectors or the ground (which was also a seperate wire). So what is this wire, and is it the reason that I don't have any sound? If it is, where on the wiring harness does it belong?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: Maybe you had the infinity sound system in your truck .. and that would mean you have a amp in your passenger kick panel ...... sounds like the remote turn on wire isn't connected ... what wire color is the extra wire ? Is it on the truck side or the Alpine ?

Message: Not sure about the extra wire. It might be a pre-run wire from the factory, maybe intended for the steering wheel audio control option. It should have no bearing on the installation of your Alpine unit.
The Alpine unit will have a remote output wire for triggering an amplifier. This wire will be blue with a white stripe. The mating harness you used will also have a blue wire with a white stripe. Connect these 2 wires together and your factory amplifier should turn on and the sound should work. If it doesn't, check all the fuses for the audio system and make sure to check for blown fuses at the Power Distribution Center under the hood by the battery. If that doesn't work, you can bypass the factory amp by running new speaker wires down to the passenger kick panel amp location and connecting the Alpine unit's outputs directly to your truck's speakers. The Haynes book lists these colors for the factory speaker wires:
Light blue/violet: Right front spkr +
Light blue/black: Right front spkr -
Tan/Violet: Right rear spkr +
Tan/Black: Right rear spkr -
White/red: Left rear spkr +
White/black: Left rear spkr -
Light green/violet: Left front spkr -
Light green/dark green: Left front spkr +
The factory radio uses this same color code for the speaker-level input wires running from the radio to the amplifier. At the amplifier, the wires from the radio should be a smaller gauge than the wires going to the speakers. If you want, you could make connections to the speaker-level input wires behind the radio and then disconnect the amplifier and connect the coprresponding wires to keep from running new speaker wires. Running new wires might be a little faster and less confusing, though.
Your problem is very likely the factory amp not getting a remote turn on from the Alpine unit. A good way to tell whether your Dakota has the factory amplifier is if you have the separate tweeters on the front doors, it is amplified. The tweeters are wired in parrallell to the woofers in each door. There should be no need to make any connections directly to the tweeters from the Alpine unit.
If you bypass the amp and still have no sound, there is probably a speaker wire shorted to ground somewhere in the truck. Use an ohm meter and check for continuity to ground on each speaker lead to find it.
Hope this helps you. Let us know how it turns out.

Message: Well, it turns out it wasn't as straight forward as you said Jimmy. I did find the blue and white wire on the back of the Alpine as you said would be there, but no matching blue and white wire on the wire harness kit; even though the kit diagram said there should be one.
So in desperation, I connected the blue/white Alpine wire to the solid blue wire on the harness kit since it was the only blue wire available, and Shazam, it worked.
Dunno why. According to the diagram, the solid blue goes to the power antenna, but oh well; I've got the tunes playing.
Thanks for the info.

Message: Am glad to have at least been of some help to you Greg. If I remember right, the mating harness for Chrysler/Dodge vehicles only had one blue wire. Not too many Chrysler products had electric antennas back when I was installing car audio systems for a living. Some vehicles have one wire to trigger an amplifier and another separate wire to trigger an electric antenna. That's why the Alpine has a solid blue wire (for the electric antenna) and a blue with a white stripe wire for remote turn on for an amplifier. When the radio was on, the antenna would extend, and the antenna would come down when the CD was playing. And I seem to remember the Chrysler/Dodges that did have electric antennas triggered the antenna and the factory amplifier with the same wire. Anyway, that may be why there was only a solid blue wire in your mating harness. I can remember that sometimes the stripe on striped harness wires was very faint as well.
I aplogize for giving somewhat wrong info. It has been a long time since the stereo days, I guess. But all is well, you got your tunes going. Enjoy...
