Subject: steering wheel controls? IP: Logged
Message: I need to get an aftermarket head unit for my 2002 Dakota sport CC. But I really want to keep the steering wheel controls. What would I need to get to be able to still use them? I heard there is an adapter that plugs into the back of the new head unit you can buy. But I also heard that the new deck needs a certain type of jack on the back for the adapter. Help please.

Message: Alan,
It is possible to keep the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket head unit. But the new unit must have a remote control of its own. Find a car audio shop that sells Peripheral interfaces, and they can sell you the pieces you need to make it work. It's been a long time since I installed one but I remember there was a module that connects to the factory steering wheel wire behind the radio, and you had a little remote "eye" that had to be mounted close to the new radio's remote pickup sensor. You also have to "learn" the interface to the remote control functions for your aftermarket unit. It should not be difficult to do yourself, or the stereo shop can do it for you.
Here's a link to Peripheral: http://www.peripheralelectronics.com/prodDetail.asp?strProductID=597&strCategory=Steering%20Wheel%20Control%20Interfaces&strSearch=

Message: You're welcome, Alan. Just be sure to test the new radio and interface before you put the dash back together. Also, if you get no sound from the new radio, make sure you connect the new radio's remote 12volt output wire to the wire that turns on the factory amplifier, if your Dakota has the factory amplified system. Chances are if you have steering wheel audio controls, your system is amplified. I have seen a lot of posts here about that problem. It helps a lot to get the harness that connects to the factory radio plug to wire your new radio. Takes the guesswork out of the installation. Both the remote output on the new radio and the trigger wire in the mating harness should be blue with a white stripe. Just be sure to insulate any unused wires.

Message: Pioneer makes several models that will work with your steering wheel controls. You will need to get an interface though like Jim said.
