 Subject: 2 JL W3's or Kicker L5's?

I am about to build a custom sub enclosure/amp rack to go under the rear seats in my Club cab. I want to use either 2 10" JL W3's or 2 10" Kicker L5's because they both use a small enclosure and are in my price range($280 or less for either pair of subs.) Let me know what subs you people think I should use. I know that both subs bump pretty hard. I'm looking for 60% sound quality and 40% bump.

The W3's are one of the best subs you can buy. Thats of course, if you could buy them. I'm pretty sure they don't make them any more. The replacement is the W6's I beleive. I may be wrong about this, but I had a friend that was looking into these and it took him over 2 months to find a new pair at a rediculous price.

It might just be where I live. He said that the shops like Tweeters and other audio places said they weren't selling them anymore. If they're still selling them I'd like to know because that's what I want in my truck.
Just looked at there website, they must still sell them. Still don't know why they said that.

Yes they still sell W3's. I can get 2 10"'s for less than $300 if I can bargain with the store owner. I might get 2 for $250.

Thanks for the info, it turns out I was way off base. I talked to the friend that got the subs and I miss quoted him. He was saying that the W6's were being phased out in favor of the new line of subs. I'll still be going with the W3.

They just started making the W3's, they stopped making the W6's. If you can find some old ass W6's, they're the best subs I've ever heard. If not, the w3's are still better than the L5's.

I believe JL is reissuing the w6s I have seen pics of them. They look like the w7s but the mounting holes are outside the surround instead of under it like the w7s.

five-o is right. We sell JL at the shop I work at. The W3 came out after the original W6, and had better excursion. The W7 came out recently, and the W6 is not being redone to look a bit like the W7. The W3 also had a minor makeover - the exterior lip around the surround is now much nicer looking, more like the outside ring of a rockford sub. I have a pair of 12W3's for sale on the classifieds section if your interested. Also have a heart-pounding amp for sale too. Anyway, e-mail me if you have any other Q's.

You must be crazy. Two 10" L5's in a vented or sealed box will out play any JL sub.
I hit a 155.00 with one 10" L5 in a vented box and that was off the dash.

Everyone listen to 2kblackdak, he is right. The w6 is comepletely redesined, the w3 has a new outter ring and a new woofer cone. I would say that the w3 will sound better, hit close to an L5, but the L5 will hit harder, but not as clean. If you want an L5 to hit hard and clean, deffinately put it in a sealed box, dont port or vent. They will hit hard and pretty clean. The JL is a cleaner sounding sub from my listening to them. Heard many cars w/ both subs, and id say JL cleaner sounding and L5 harder hitting. So thats your decition that you will have to make. Take it easy guys.

jl still makes w3s they just now call them w3v2s the cone is different and the coil also had a minor makover i have four in my 93 love em to death L5s cant even compare

Kevin 155 with a L5 ok buddy maybe a L7. Dude JL are one of the best out there. The 12w3's are nice when ran with the JL 500/1 or you can do the 15W0s with the 500/1 and just be awesome. The 15s are only about $179 a piece Im sure you can get a deal. The JL new W7 and W6V2 (I got) are very cool. Alittle more excursion and unbelieveable sound quality. If you can get some old W6s those are one of the best SPL subs out there. The new anniversery ones are very cool too specially with the grey cap. Kicker square subs sound wierd but you can get them loud the only thing is the dont last...

I have a Rockford Fosgate Power 501bd mono amp rated at 300 x1 @ 4 ohms and 500 x 1 @ 2 ohms. I want to upgrade to two 10" W3's in a sealed box. What ohm rating (2, 4, or 6) speakers should I get and how should they be wired (series, parallel, etc). Thanks

are you joking me? the OLD w6v1 was made for SQ and has a smaller mounting depth than the old w3 which will get louder than the old w6, the w3 was for spl more than sq. the new w6v2 is massive, similar to a w7 and the new w3v2 is a little more powerful and has a flat cone. an L5 or L7 will out slam a w3 any day of the week, but why get a w3 or l5 when there is so much more that hits harder, for cheaper.

#2 Ive betten a little escort that had 2 15" L7 Kickers that were ran
by 4 JL 500/1's with 2 12" W6v2 and a Xtant 1001.
Kicker are cool though.
Ralph please use 2 10" W3d4s you will get a 2 ohm load in paralel
Each sub will see around 225-250 rms a piece

Well, from my personal experience Iīd choose the L5s..., why?, īcause the w3s donīt hit hard at all in rap, rhythm&blues and the alike. I owned one (12" v1), it was powered by a MTX Blue Thunder PRO250XD (351 watts rms @ 2 ohms) and whenever I pumped it up, there was this burning smell, so I turned down the ampīs gain and still finished with a useless sub, the power leads were broken, I fixed them but then the threads themselves broke, so... I bought a Kicker L5, I was reluctant about the sq so I used the same enclosure I built for the JLAudio, an .89 cu ft sealed enclosure. Results?, the bass is not a 100% as accurate as the Jlīs, granted, but it is really clean sounding, fast, controllable and LOUD as hell, my poor amp is trying to keep up with the 600watts rms L5īs rating but it just gets real hot while the sub is pounding cool as a breeze. So when you want a powerful, clean, all-musical sub with a tiny little enclosure (actually smaller than the box the sub came in)go for the L5, thatīs it and thatīs MHO. (If youīve got the money for the W6 or W7s then go for them, they are fine subs, but personally, I still think their sound quality is over-rated and value is low with such expensive price tags...)
