I hope I'm not being repetitive but I was wondering if anyone has tried to install a subwoofer in the center area of the front bench seat in their quad cab dakota?
It seems pretty feasible. Lemme know lemme know. ; )

I had a custom box made to replace the center console on my 2001DQC. The sound shop tore the guts out of the seat section and built a box big enough to fit two 8" subs, then reinstalled the original factory fabric over the box. I still have the arm rest/glove box and you can't tell there is a speaker box in the center of the front seat! The sound is superb. I put the amp under the seat. The only down side was that the amp sticks out from under the back of the seat, so you will have to build some sort of cover over the back of the amp so no one kicks it when they sit in the back seat. Other than that, I am totally impressed with the sound.

I've read that you can build your own box for behind your back seat. The only thing is is that you gotta take out that back seat,... the driverside back seat to be exact. The guy said he fit an 8" so I hope this can help. I love making my custom boxes so if you need some help doin that,.. I can give you some tips. Hope your QC sub prob. gets solved. Peace Out.

Thanks for the suggestion, Yaaabuddy03, I did read that post but the guy mentioned he could no longer lift his hear seat up with the box installed so that's a no-go for me.
I have the Kenwood KVT910DVD installed and don't have much room for an amp under the passenger seat since the brain-unit is taking up most of that space. TonyC, did you say they installed your amp under the center section of your bench seat or under your passenger seat? Also, your setup sounds like the best idea yet. Can people still sit in the center section if they had to? With a seatbelt?

I actually had two amps installed. One for the mids and one for the subs. They both fit under each of the front seats and, like I said, they stuck out of the back a little. I built two tapered metal kick plates in my shop to cover the back of each amp and then covered them with carpet. It looks like part of the truck and now they're "kick resistant".
I wouldn't put a speaker behind the back seat for a number of reasons. One, you have to leave out a bolt when you put everything back together. Two, you can no longer lift up the seat. Three, I wouldn't want to compromise any safety issues by modifying how the seat is reinstalled. And four, anyone sitting in that seat when the stereo is on will receive a free "Back Massage" (LOL).
As far as the center section modification is concerned, in order to maintain the appropriate cubic feet to yield the best sound out of the subs, the center section sits up about an inch and a half higher than it did before. Because the center seat belt bolts directly to the body of the truck, I did not compromise the integrity of the belt attachment. I have had a small person sit in that center seat before I made the modification and I can tell you this, it was very uncomfortable to drive the truck with someome sitting there, so I usually don't make it a habbit to sit someone there. In a pinch, however, someone could sit there legally and safely. Their butt will be really sore on a long ride, though, seeing as how the seat is now solid with no padding.

The speaker box in place of the front center seat sounds like a perfect solution. Specially since you said you were able to keep the arm rest section with the storage and re-used the fabric to keep it consistent. Do you have any pictures? Cost estimates? Shop recommendations? I'm in So Cal

I have an '01 QC and am very interested in sticking a sub in the center seat. TonyC, any chance you have pics of your setup for the rest of us to see? I like the fact that you don't have to ruin your rear seat folding up and it still looks stock. Any help is appreciated

I'm waiting for the stereo shop to E-Mail me the pictures of the sub box. I will have to light a fire under their a@@es and get them moving. Once I get them, I will post them.
As far as the cost of the system; fabrication and installation of the sub box, installation of two 8" subs, installation of two amplifiers under each front seat, and installation of four midrange and tweets in the doors cost me $1700.00. I already had a Sony X-PLOD 50X4 FM stereo CD player installed. The speakers and amps were made by CROSSFIRE.
I live in Southern New Hampshire. Most people I talked to thought the price was fair.

I put a mtx 10 behind my back driver's side passenger seat and didn't have any issues putting the seat back in. All four nuts and bolts. You just have to make the box one side at a time. Took me about 5 hours to make it correctly. Had to notch the back and all. I made it out of 3/4 inch MDF though. Sounds great! Really filled the truck. Not a whole lot of Real low end but sounds really tight on the highs. No you cannot raise the 40 side up anymore though. That is the main reason I went with the forty side. That way I can still get to my jack as well. All in all it is very possible. Ended up costing me 18 dollars for the wood and 5 hard hours of my time.

That sounds like a sweet system. I paid about the same for a system in my Eclipse (Discarded for the Dak of course). 2 10" JL Audio Subs in a custom box, 2 6", 2 tweeters, 2 amps and a Sony deck with a remote 10 CD changer. (Back in '97... can you say casette deck...) Unfortunately someone in my area decided at 2 in the morning they wanted the system more than me. Made it a heck of a lot easier to get rid of the car with spliced wires under the hood and only half the windows tinted! Anyway, I'm in no way an audio expert but think a sub or two in place of the front middle seat would be perfect.

You can also put a 10" sub behind the front middle console in between the front and back seats. You just have to take out the back seats cup holder and fire the sub down.

Thanks for the follow through... That set up still looks like the best solution for us Quad Cab owners. The picture really helped clear up what I was trying to visualize. Looking forward to the additional pictures when you get the time. 7 day cruise... NICE! Hope you got to mix in a little island hopping. (Assuming you were doing the Caribbean) You said up top that the center section now sits about 1 1/2" to provide the cubic feet for best sound. Just to confirm, that means you COULD have mounted it flush with the front seats if you wanted to but it would be at the expense of sound quality. Probably a trivial question but aesthetically does it still look good with the difference between the seats? Thanks for helping out!

More pics have been added to my web page showing what the middle seat sub box looks like. The sticking up above the seat part doesn't look bad and if you weren't looking for it, you probably wouldn't notice it. I have had people with the same type of truck look for the subs and never notice the console being up higher than the seats. You be the judge. Use the arm rest to scale the height of the box and it will give you a rough idea of the height difference. Making the box higher was the only way to get the .6 cubic feet of air space per speaker that is recommended. I suppose I could have gone with a more powerful amp to make up the difference, but it seemed too risky to me.
Lethal Sounds in Hooksett, NH is where the work was done. I highly recommend them for anyone in the area. They did a fantastic job and were just as excited about it as I was.
By the way. Aruba, Curacao. St. Maarten, and St. Thomas aboard the Adventure of the Seas. My bar tab was over $600.00. I think I had a good time.

I'm not all that into this really I'd just put in some sweet speakers and amps and everything to out do my roomie.. But couldn't you have gone with a speaker that needed less air?
I'm actually printing out those pictures as I type so I can take it to a local shop and see what they think they can do.

What did your local shop say? I think you will find is that you really need a certain amount of air space for optimum sound quality. That's why the speaker box is the size that it is.

KC area? I'm in the Nashville, TN area. I went ahead and bought a Pioneer amp yesterday and will buy a 10" sub in a day or two. After that I'm going to start on the project. I hope to put the amp under the passenger seat and the sub behind the 40 seat. I've got dimensions on a box someone here made using an 8" sub. I'm going to give that a whirl. I'll keep yall posted on the success or failure. :-)
