Message: Make sure the amp rca's are hooked to sub output on deck, set amp to low pass and a low frequency, if adjustable(play with it till it sounds good), if your head unit dosen't have a sub preamp hook up to rear and go buy a low pass filter or external crossover for your amp. I bieleve that should cover it if not someone else should post eventually

Message: Oh yeah also the 400 watt amp is probably rated at about 100-150rms x 2 maybe, you probably need a bigger amp to be able to push the subs like they need to be. Always look at rms not max power.

Message: I think mjkota got it right. Your not running enough power to the subs. When you turn the amp up to make the subs louder it overdrives the amp, putting the amp into clipping and distorting the signal going to the subs. Yeah it's louder, but bad louder.
I have 1 Infinity Perfect 12 rated at 350W RMS running off a RF 300S "900W amp" benched at 376W RMS and it's a good match, probably could use a bit more power if anything.
I would look for an amp rated at 700-800W RMS for your pair of subs. Bigger is better, you can always trun down an amp that's too powerful, but cant turn up an amp up that's too weak.

Message: The factory radio is equalized for the cabin and stock speakers. your head unit has no such EQ in it, and I'm willing to bet that the midrange of the new speakers is now a lot hotter than the stock ones, making the bass sound relatively weak.

Message: Where have you got the filter on the amp set to? High pass, Low pass or full? If you're running a full range speaker, it should be set to Full.

I am NOT an expert but I have alpine type r's too, and I know what you are talking about. I have components in the front and coaxial rears. When I first hooked them up to my new system they sounded bad. No bass and no mid range and the tweeters were harsh with sharp sounds that drilled holes through my brain.
My alpine dva-9965 head unit kicks ass though. I started playing around with the settings and the speakers sound great now. The biggest difference happened when I turned on Media Xpander. It went from a flat dull crappy sound to sounding rich and full like speakers are supposed to. Then I tweeked my equalizer and it sounds even better.
I put dynamat extreme inside my doors and outside and I glued some egg crate foam behind the speakers. The egg crate foam really helped to eliminate the resonating sound inside my doors. I installed my tweeters in the stock location and aimed them up at the rearview mirror.
IMO, type r's sound pretty good and they are freaking LOUD too. But they sound like garbage until you get your settings right. You might need some more equipment if your head unit doesn't have it built in like mine does.

Message: you are either underpowered,or you have your pos&neg reversed on one of your speakers. if you are running an amp, make sure you dont have 2 crossovers overlapping, meaning if your head unit has one,and your amplifier.it will give you a bad frequency

Message: I'd check the wiring. As already mentioned here, you could be playing your subs out of phase, which eliminates bass. They could also be cancelling each other out if their sound waves cross together.

Message: Doesn't Walmart sell Clarion amps? That's probably why it sounds like a walmart system. It's only going to sound as good as the lowes quality part.
Try this; follow the instructions step by step, the ones that are relevant, and see if it sounds better.

Message: 1, YOU were the one that said, in your very first post, and I quote, "they sound like some walmart subs playing"
2, Walmart DOES sell Clarion amps. A 4 channel Clarion amp from walmart is about as big as a cigarette package and comes in a clamshell pack... we're talking quality product there. They don't even get the dignity of being locked up in the case with the X-plod amps. hahahaha. Sorry, but it is funny.
