All radios (Head Units) have a maximum wattage output. This is why we use external amplifiers...to increase our output. There is some truth about your speakers limiting your system though. It's more of a marriage of a good HU and a good set of speakers though. Changing your speakers won't increase your output, but it can give you a crisper sound and allow you to maximize the output of the HU without creating distortion by overdriving your speakers. It can work against you as well when you underdrive a good set of speakers and don't put enough power through them. If you put some Alpine's in it will probably sound better, but it won't be any louder.
