Subject: HEAD UNIT VS AMP IP: Logged
Message: well heres the thing, my head unit puts out 52w max. my buddy gave me an old 4ch amp he had layin around and i looked up the specs and its puts out 50wx4 max and 25wx4 rms. its not even worth hooking up is it?

Message: YOu can't really go by max watts, RMS is what counts. Depending on the model/brand, almost all external amps will perform better than a head unit. Head units don't have the space inside them for a large enough transformer to make good power. The amp will probably give you marginally better SQ, and cleaner power and maybe a bit louder. Just make sure you're not driving it into clipping, which will sound like crap and probably damage your speakers.

Message: Fuzzball is correct but you could just bridge it to two speakers if you want it louder.
