Subject: Factory cd player installation IP: Logged
Message: Howdy all!
I'm working on getting my '03 Dakota theft recovery back into driving condition, and have worked my way to the audio problems. The original cd player and speakers were of course stolen, and I bought a used factory cd player to replace it. I have wired the 16-wire extension back together, as it was cut out. When I put it back into the new cd player w/ the antenna plug as well, it won't turn on.
To my mind this meant either bad wiring, a blown fuse or a busted used cd player. The wiring was pretty straight forward so I'm not too worried about that, at least right now. I change the fuse and that didn't help. So... a few questions...
1) Does anyone know if a car audio shop would be able to 'test' my player to make sure it's not dead?
2) On the back of the cd player, there are three plugins. One for the large 16-wire extension, one for the antenna, and one smaller plugin next to the large extension. I have no set of wires or plug that could fit into that slot. Does anyone know what it is, or if it's something that should exist on my truck?
3) Anyone know a good brand of 6" speakers that I should buy as replacements? Looking for fair quality and longevity, but not for anything amazing.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give, I'm a bit lost in a dark wood at this point.

Message: 1, Not sure about a 'car audio' shop; maybe if they have a bench power supply, but an electronics repair shop could test it;. YOu can do it with a 2amp battery charger; - to - and + to + and hook up a speaker. Might actually want to hook up the speaker/s before hand, so none of the wires touch and blow the amp. and make sure no other bare wires touch each other.
2, Mine has that extra ~10 pin plug as well, nothing plugged into it, I suspect it may be pre-amp voltage outputs for an external amp, maybe??
3, the factory door speakers should be 6 3/4", so a 6.5" would be the best match. I used the factory spacers and a strip of weather stripping to seal the speakers to the spacers. It took a little creativity to use the spacers, the fronts needed small holes drilled in them for the speaker screws to go into, the rears needed larger holes and are actually screwed through the spacer and into the metal of the door. YOu have to separate the the spacer from the factory speaker, almost takes three hands but you can do it. Anyhow, I bought Pioneer 6.5's from Walmart.

Message: Forgot to say, those Pioneers are a vast improvement over the stock speakers. TS-1640R is the model #.

Message: if i remember correctly ... our 03 used one big plug that fit into both slots on the factory player... the older... like the 99 had 2 connectors

That's used for connecting the factory CD changer or Sirius tuner.
