Subject: Remove plastic sheet behind door? IP: Logged
Message: I installed new speakers in my door panels in my 97 regular cab. Ive had people tell me to remove the plastic sheet behind the doors for a better sound. With them installed and the door reassembled, you can hear the plastic rattle around a bit. Whats the harm in removing that plastic? It doesnt seem to help with weather proofing, and in no way protects the speaker. Has anyone removed it, and with what results?
Thanks,
Matt

Message: I did not remove them but I did cut out a bit of the plastic so there is a larger space between the speaker and the plastic. I would not remove this. The newer Daks are pretty quit rides and removing these kinds of things will take a little away from the sound proofing of the vehicle.

Message: The plastic isnt for sound proofing, its a barrier against water vapor. I was wondering if anyone removed this and had any problems with it letting water enter the cab.

Message: Well, in your first statement you said it doesn't seem to help with weather proofing but now you tell me it is for water vapor? Isn't that a form of weather proofing?
I was just giving my 2-bits as everyone else does on this website so if your going to correct someone try not to contradict yourself.

Message: I mean that it doesnt seem to prevent rain from getting onto anything important, such as the window mechanism, door latch, or speaker. Protecting from water vapor isnt really weather proofing. I appreciate your response, but I need to know if anyone has removed it. We can debate what it might do for weeks, but without doing it, we will never know for sure.

Message: I replaced my door speakers about 5 months ago, and tore the sheet off the adhesive by accident. I didn't really bother to fix it up, but when all was done and I was driving down the highway, you can feel a definite draft coming through by the speakers, door locks, and power window switches. So I would imagine that it keeps out water and wind.

Message: You don't need to remove it. You can add a layer of some sort of a soft material behind the plastic and it will solve all your sound problems. I know, 'cause I've done it to mine and pump 125wrms into the doors with no noise from the plastic.

Message: I removed them from my 04 qc. Replaced it with closed cell carpet underpad - Home Depot.
