Subject: 99 CC Double Din?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have 1999 Dakota CC Sport.

Getting ready to install new speakers to replace the blown factory Infinitys.

Looking into replacing the receiver later down the road. Can anyone tell me if a double din will fit? Or is it a Din 1/2?

Also if I do replace the receiver will I need to bypass the factory amp to use the power of the new receiver, if so how?

Thanks for the help.

It's DIN 1/2. Pioneer makes a DIN 1/2 head unit, and Alpine used to, but I am pretty sure it's been discontinued. There are also all kinds of dash kits to get the single DIN units to fit.

You dont need to bypass the factory amp, but I think it puts out power at 2 Ohms, whereas most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohm. Whether or not this is a bad thing is beyond me, but I think it's why it is recommended to bypass the amp, even if you aren't putting in an aftermarket amp.

To bypass the amp, all you need to do is splice the inputs (from the deck to the amp) directly to the outputs (from the amp to the speakers), thus removing the amp from the circuit. You could also run all new speaker wire from the head unit to the speakers, if you are so inclined.

The DEH-P47DH and the DEH-P77DH are Pioneer's DIN 1/2 head units. They are identical except the 77 has 3 pre-outs instead of 2 and a remote control.

The standard size head unit that you see everywhere is called single DIN, so ours are essentially 1/2 again as big and double DIN, often seen in Japanese cars, are twice as big.

The Pioneer DEH P77DH has a lot more bells and whistles than just an extra preamp output and remote control, it's worth the extra $50. I can't remember all the additional features, but I got the 77 since the 47 wasn't worth the $50 savings.

Basically with the 77 you only need the deck a couple of amps and speakers to build a system, the EQ and amp balancing is built into the 77.

The 77 and 47 fit up to 2000 perfeclty, though you can squeeze it into a 01 and up if your creative.

If your going with a good aftermarket deck with planty of power, bypass the stock amp by running new speaker wire. It might be a PITA, but if you ever need to go back to stock all your stock wiring will be intact. Hack up the wiring harness and you'll be kicking yourself in the azz when you get rid of the truck.

I didnt know the 77 was more than just the preamp and the remote, I'll have to go out and play with it more...I did notice lots of EQ adjustment, but I dont know a lot about that stuff so I leave it alone.

I agree on new speaker wire, but at the time the speakers were already in and the installers didnt bypass the amp, so i didnt want to run all new wire. I now do all my own install. I cut up my harness, but I left enough wire on the plug ends so I could re-install them should I feel so inclined.
