Subject: Completed 01 QC sub enclosure with Pics! IP: Logged
Message: I just finished building a sub enclosure to house 2 Kicker Solo Baric S8L5 subs and a Fosgate P5002 amp to drive them. I had been wanting to do this for some time now and finally just gave in to it. I have pictures of every phase of construction available if anyone is interested just email me. I'll leave an email address at the end of the post. I did remove the vents and cover the openings and haven’t had any problems with it. The box is a built in and I did cut the fiberboard that is behind the rear seat to accommodate the new sub enclosure. I also had to cut the carpet below the boxes to allow them to rest more evenly on the floor. The air volume ended up being about .60, the Kicker recommend between .33 and .75 on the S8L5 subs, so I fell in the middle. I need to break the subs in for a few hours, but I am more impressed with the system than I thought I would be. I've had systems with four 10's or 2 15s and this system slams along with the best. I will eventually replace the component speakers and the head unit, but for now. I'm very happy. :)

Message: Yeah, I saw your setup while I was looking around for ideas. I had to go with a smaller setup because I often need to get 3 people in the back seat. (Being a dad and all). I do like your setup though.

Message: Yes I did. Why do you see something wrong? :)
I hadn't built a box in almost 20 years so it was a lot of fun doing it again. Not the best system I've ever built but it definitely sounds good.

Message: na nothing is wrong. my friend built my box and i had a company cover it. and most people use the center console in the front and replace it and i did something todally different. and i've seen boxes behind the rear seats but they are pre built and they basically shoved em back there. it's nice to see custom work instead of pre built.

Message: Yeah gr00vie, that does look good, nice custom work. I built a down-fire center console box for a single 12" since there's limited room behind the rear seats of QC's. Your setup makes good use of the limited space.
What was your top and bottom dimension on the boxes?

Message: Thanks for all of the complements. :)
The top of the box is 3 inches and the bottom is 7 inches. (That's inside measurements.) The right box is 15 inches wide and the left box is 14 inches wide. I cut the boxes to that size so that they would fit between the seat mounts on the bottom. I also ended up running the power and speaker cables through the bottom of one of the boxes, I trapped them in a bed of silicone to keep them from vibrating when the bass hits. I also put some polyfill in both boxes. I'm thinking of opening the boxes and putting some Dynamat on the back wall. I've had some small vibrations on the outside of the cab and I think that might fix it. I might also take the headliner down and trap the dome light wires in something to keep them from rattling. While I have it open I think I will put some dynamat there also.

Message: Nice job dude. People thought I was crazy hackin' it up behind my seats.
I noticed you also covered up your vents.
Recently I added more insulation behind my subs, or more like putting the insulation BACK that I had cut out. This was because I added a LOUD exhaust and needed to cut the noise coming in back there.
So I sealed the holes better where the vents were since I had just popped them out, and cut in a NEW hole for a single vent between the two subs (have no wood interconnecting like yours).
I think them vents are to release air pressure when you slam the doors with the windows up.
You may never have a problem regardless.
Glad to see more people finding room without removing a seat, having exposed subs, etc. Although we know blkquad probably has one loud sucker with them like that. But I too have kids, etc in the back seat so removing was not an option. But remounting them forward for some good subs was :)

Message: I think I am leaning in that direction as well. Was having a look today with a tape measure, entertaining options trying to figure out how I can get all my sitting room back. The 04's rear seat is different, the seat folds up instead of the back folding down. I may be able to do it with only taking the backs out... anyone know what size the Torx bit is for taking out the seat-backs?

Message: Fuzzball, none of the QC seats fold down from the factory, you have to mod the seat backs to get them to fold down. GraphiteDak has a ggod write up on modding the back seats on his web page if I remember right.
As I remember you have to cut 1/2" off the bottom end of the back rest brackets, the ones on the seat. Once you clip the brackets you will be able to flip the seats tops down,,, or fold the seat bottoms up.

Message: Thanks.
I got most of it done yesterday and finished today by moving the amp from under the driver side rear seat. I still have to make three extensions for the seat backs, to bolt up at the bottom, should get that done tomorrow.

I think I want to amp my door speakers now (not stock) anyone done just the fronts and left the rears powered by the HU? I'm thinking that may be best to keep the soundstage in the front, but I'd be willing to spend a few more bucks for a 4 channel amp if it'd be better.
