Yeah, it could be....some Infinity systems have an external amp. You can choose not to use the kit but it will likely sound like crap because it will go through this amp and the output from the new head unit will be at a much higher output level than from the stock unit. This makes it sound louder but it also amplifies the static that you normally wouldn't hear.
My buddy has the infinity system in his truck and he put an aftermarket head unit in with a kit from Crutchfield and it sounds perfect. The kit was only a 20 bucks or so I think, and it makes installation a snap.

Actually...I looked into it a little and you don't need an adapter to make it sound right. A harness sure makes it easier though and if its only a din sized unit you can get a kit that maket it fit the big hole in your dash perfectly.
