Need to replace the speakers....right side front and back starting to pop.
Clutchford said I have self powered speakers and would have to add an amp with new speakers....is this true.
I just want the sound back...when the truck was new it sounded really good.
Do I have to add an amp when replacing the speakers or are they just trying to get more money out of me?

Message: Thanks for the reply. It was not the web site that told me they were self powered speakers. It was Clutchfields customer service. I went to their web site and got on a chat with Keith at thier CS and he said that if I replace the speakers they will have no sound due to no power since the stock are self powered and I would have to buy an amp as well.
If this is not true I will never buy any thing from them again.
Can anyone recommend another good site and a midprice speaker to replace all of the stocks?
I am not planning on add more power at this time but could add some woofers and an am latter.
Thank you for your help.

Message: Yeah thats definitely not true. I replaced mine in my RC with a set of rockford fosgate components (wanted to have front and rear components) but I have the inifinty package and the stock infinity amp is enough to power them. However if you dont have the infinity package I'm not sure that the factory head unit has enough power to push a set of components. Really if you think about it, does it really matter how good of speakers you put in the rear because your only going hear so much of it from the front anyway. Any decent set should do. I think the guys at crutchfield are thinking of some of the other speakers in some chryslers that did have amplifiers on each speaker. One way to know for sure is to take one out. If it looks like a regular speaker it is probably a regular speaker. If it has a little box on it with power wires going into it then it has its own amp. I never heard of any of the dakotas have self powered speakers though.

really? Stock speakers are powered by the head unit, aka stereo,
aka the thing in your dash. While they put out very low amounts of
power, a Speaker needs a source to power it, it cannot power itself.
Cruthfield is actually a really good company, and I am guessing the
person you talked to live wasnt really named Keith and was some
indian guy accross the ocean, probably miss understanding what
you meant...

Message: I was just dealing with the EXACT same thing today. My local audio installer told me the same thing. Infinity systems MAY not allow replacement of speakers only. He said they wouldn't know for sure until they got into the installation. Then, my local Chrysler dealer confirmed that MANY mopar Infinity speakers contain an amp. The key here is that everyone is saying, "some, many, maybe and we don't know for sure". Its good to read here, in a previous post, that Dakota Infinity speakers do not have built in amps. With that knowledge, I may pursue the upgrade for my '97. Would love to hear someone else confirm this! Anyone pulled their speakers recently to have a look??

Message: Wow...ive never heard of this before in my life..self powered speakers in a late 90s vehicle. Ive even consulted with Crutchfield on my vehicle before. I replaced mine in my 98 Durango with the infinity package. It has a stock amplifier which can power any aftermarket speakers you put in. Even components like my Infinity Kappas. I did need speaker adapters which i got from crutchfield for $15.
The only problem is when you replace your headunit - aka CD player with an aftermarket. Use the factory harness adapter and make sure you connect the stock amplifier wire to the remote-turn-on lead on the new head unit. Otherwise the factory amp will not turn on with the headunit and your speakers will get no sound.

Message: Haha yeah the first time I tested my new head unit there was no sound. Then I remembered I forgot that wire for the stock amp. It is easy to forget to connect that one especially if you don't know/forgot about the stock infinity amp.

Message: Tell me about that! I remember back in the day swapping out a head unit for a high performance one. We got it all hooked up right with the meter, turned it on and nothing. We had subs sure, but that was it. Man, did we ever rip that apart like 100 times looking for the problem. We couldn't figure it out. We tested the deck, then the wires and then the deck 100 times! It took a call to our local Dodge dealership to determine that there was a stock amp that had to be powered. Man was I mad! LOL!!! But hey, now I know right. As for individualy powered speakers? I think they're on crack. But then again I had no idea about the amp and thought that was a crazy idea too!

The chrysler minivans still have them.

For a long time, Harman (Infinity) had a thing for powered speakers in cars. They had a single-channel amplifier mounted onto the speaker basket, snuggled up to the magnet. we used to derisively call them "donut" amps.

Message: OK, been trying to do some more reserach on this. Looks like the factory infinty amp only pushes 2 ohm. So if I get new speakers (4 ohm) I am only going to have half of the volume of the orginal.
So just have to decide on what components to get up front and 2 ways in the back. Would like to get off of ebay but just do not know enough about speakers to know what to buy.
Then after I get the speakers and install them, if there is not enough volume I will have to add an amp. Then I am sure I will have problems adding an because of the factory receiver.
Going...going...going...$$$$$
Man I just want to listen to a little music with out the popping.....
Can someone with experience recommend a good midprice speakers I can get off ebay.

That's not a given. You have to take the speakers' sensitivity into account.

Message: Um.......yea there is. Even the Dodge dealership told me that. The front speakers ALONE are $210 apiece. Rear are $120. That's almost $600 for 4 speakers. My stock speaker wiring has 4 wires going to EACH speaker, 2 for the on-board amp on the speaker, 2 for signal. I guess the Dealership didn't know what they were talking about with their own trucks when they work on them everyday.......
