Subject: Infinity Reference Components IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone here have the Infinity Reference 6.5" component system in their dak? I want this set for my front doors, but they are so bright that I think I need to pair them with something outside of the reference series for the rear speakers. I intend to put some kind of 6.5" coaxials in the rear, but I'm not sure what to go with. Has anyone else noticed how bright the references are? What did you pair them with to fill out the sound? Thanks!

Message: Warden, I have 2 sets of Infinity Reference components in my 03 QC (front & rear), they are the older 605CS speakers. Have you tried the -3bd tweeter terminal on the crossover yet, if not, try to tame the tweeters with the -3db terminal.
I have these speakers run off a 4x50W Orion amp and the tweets were still screaming while being run off the Infinity crossover's -3db terminal. I had to construct Lpad's to drop the volume of the tweeters even further, think I made -2db, maybe -3db Lpad's. Using the stereo controls to reduce the volume to the tweeters made them sound muted and sick, not a solution.
An Lpad consists of a parallel resistor to reduce the power going to the tweeter and a series resistor to keep the tweeter load at 4 ohms. A 4 ohm resistor in parallel with the tweeter will reduce it's volume by 50% and a 2 ohm resistor in series will keep the tweeters load at 4 ohms. You have to keep the tweeters load at 4 ohms or the Infinity crossover will do funny things. I ordered several values of 5W and 10W sand resistors from allelectronincs.com (cost about $20) so I could make four -1, -2 and -3 bd Lpads, didn't know what was going to drop the volume of the tweeters the correct amount. (some of the resistors could be used in several different Lapds)
Run a msn or google search on Lpad and you will find some calculators to help you select the correct values of resistors to order and use, your not going to get 100% accuracy on the resistors, but get something close, might have to use a 4.7 ohm if your looking for a 5 ohm, 2.2 ohm for 2 ohm, etc,,,
I made the Lpads with one wire coming in and 2 wires going out, this way I could splice them into the wire going to the speaker instead of having to attach them to the speaker. Basically soldered the resistors together, left the proper leads exposed and taped the resistors together. With that done I cut the positive wire going to the tweeter and stripped a spot bare on the negative wire. The Lpad connected to the +amp wire, +tweeter wire and the common -amp/tweeter
With the Lpads installed, the speakers sound SWEET. I would start with a -2db Lpad and if it's still too bright go with a -3db Lpad.

Message: Thanks for the info. I actually haven't bought the speakers yet. I really like thier clarity, better than all the others I saw, but was turned off by how high they are. Do you think these speakers would go well with a pair of 6.5 coaxial speakers in the rear that is more defined in the low end, like an MTX or Polk, or do you think the tweets will still overpower it? I found a set of MTX 6X9s that sound great with the reference components, but I don't want to go with 6X9s in the rear because I want to preserve the stock speaker grill look.
Do you have any pictures of the Lpad setup?

Turned off by price or tweeter volume? You can get them on Ebay for about $100, less if you do some looking.
I don't have any pics of the Lpads, they wouldn't look like much if I did. They are just a couple of resistors soldered to the speaker wire and taped up, but they make all the difference in the world sound wise.

Message: The tweeters are super efficient which lends them to being louder than the mid driver. I think the main problem of my installation is that the tweeters are real close and pointed in the direction of the listener, while the mid drivers are far away, pointed at your feet and obscured my the door panel. If the mid drivers were pointed up towards the listener, I think the tweeters wouldn't be so over powering.
If your listening to the speakers in a stereo shop or audio store, they won't sound the same in your truck, different accoustics. Plus they might have the tweeters run straight off the crosovers, I think most people use the -3db connection.
The Infinity Reference component speakers are great,,, after getting the tweeters ballanced properly. If they weren't balanced with the Lpads I wouldn't have the same opinion. Selecting a different spot for the tweeters might have made them sound better without the Lpads also.
Maybe if I had mounted the mids in the sail panels and the tweeters low in the door they would have been perfectly balanced... LOL
