I installed my head unit to my 2002 dakota but i didn't use a wiring kit. So the head unit can be turn on without turning on the truck. Will this drain my battery over time?

Why would you want to cut out the factory harness to begin with???

Sound like your turn on lead is connected to the battery wire. There are two power wires. One is always hot (this one is for the yellow wire on the head unit) and the other turns on with the key swith (This is for the red wire on the head unit). I dont recall what the factory colors are.
