Message: Either you find the wire schmatics to figure out which wire it the remote for the stereo or run a wire to a fuse in the fuse box the is only on when the truck is on. Otherwise known as an accessory fuse. usually the one for the stereo itself works.

Message: Your factory deck will have an ignition wire that is what you want to tap into. Get yourself a test light and find the one that comes on and off with the ignition.
Or you can use your fuse box, there are open fuse area's that are available. I hooked my radar detector there.

Message: Go to Walmart or Radio Shack and get yourself a $5 test light. Hook one end up to a ground and then insert the other end into the wire you may think is an ignition wire. Turn your key on the off, if the light turns on and off you have yourself an ignition wire. Works the same with your fuse box, just test things. It also works great for hooking up trailer lights, and other jobs.
BTW- It looks like a sharp screwdriver with a wire on one end.

Message: I am pretty sure its the orange wire but don't bet your system on it. Usually Red is for constant 12v and orange or yellow indicates ignition switched 12V. Black is almost always ground in a DC system. In vehicles with an auto antenae the blue wire usually denotes the remote turn on. If you do hook up your amp turn on to the wrong power supply you won't hurt anything, you will just drain your battery when your truck is off.
Instead of getting a test light buy a meter...they are very easy to use and way more usefull than a test light. I think Radio Shack has an analog one for $10.

Message: heres another question...
how many times can I splice the remote turn on lead without causing any problems? right now I have a rockford bd1000, 400.4, epicenter and EQS all spliced off of 1 rempote turn on lead. I get a slight blip or pop when everything turns on and i was wondering if it might be elimintated by running a seperate wire to each of the amps? any suggestions?

Message:
The remote turn-on lead that most head units will not provide very much current (usually 250-300mA), so there is a limit to the number of
components you can activate with it. Generally, it is safe to hook up two devices to the lead without having to worry about problems.
However, if you'll be activating more components, then you should probably use a relay. So go to a stereo shop or maybe radio shack and get a relay.

Message: Be careful...to much of a load could cause the remote out in your head unit to blow. It can cost anywhere from 40-100bucks to have that fixed. I would definitely get a relay if I were you, they're only a couple of bucks at the SHACK

Message: Another option is to tap in to the accessory wire at you ignition switch. Go to www.designtech-intl.com and pull up the vehicle wiring for the truck's year. This is very easy to do and does not cost you anything!
Good luck

Message: I am also having problems with my remote wire in my 2003 4runner. I spliced into the antenna wire behind my head unit, but apparently it only comes on w/ the radio and not the cd player. Is there another wire that I can use if I want power to come on w/ the head unit only? And is it bad if I use another source that comes on whenever the car is on, regardless of the head unit?

Message: Sorry guys, I was too dumb to read the fact that this is a Dakota forum. Oops. But if anyone knows anything about that remote wire, I'd appreciate it.
