Subject: Subs into reg cab truck.

I know that everyone does the "I have a regular cab, and I want some phat bass all up inz." or something else equally as annoying.. so I'll be diffrent:

I *AM* installing the subs in there, I've installed sub's into an old 85 S-15 Pickup(reg cab), and they were awesome, did that out of MDF, going to do this out of fiberglass I think.

Although there is a question! lol :)

Should I point the subs backwards into the rear of the cab, or straight into the seat, I had them straight into the seat on my truck before, and god it sucked, would get giant back ache's. At the same time though, having them go into the rear, doesn't it quiet them down some? I'm planning on building a MDF Bottom, and probaly a MDF backing(against the seats), but going to use fiberglass for the part where the sub's face.. so I can mold it backwards some to maximize air volume, and keep the sub from hitting the rear.

Anyone see an issue with that?

Anyone done something similiar? I've never used fiberglass in this way before.. its always a complete fiberglass, or complete MDF.

I would say just go with facing them towards the seat. Facing them backwards would have them rattling up against the back of the truck. I would suggest getting a control knob for the amp that allows you to set the volumn of the subs.

Just outta curiosity, what type subs/amp/headunit do you have?

No subs yet or anything, was planning it all out first. I was thinking about placing two 10" s in the box.. going to make some 3d model's at work first, see the volume and such, do the math.. but I really wanna set them back some into the box, so the sub can't hit the seat at full excursion..

Dunno, wish I could make the model now lol

what you could do is fire them backwards with a vent on the top(pointing towards to roof), making a sort of 4th order bandpass

Eh, not a giant fan of bandpass.. dunno, had it before.. and just ended up disliking it. bass was too "loose" I guess you'd call it. I'll think about it though.. i'll probaly end up making a few boxes. I'll sell you guys some :P

Got the truck today, did some measure... looks like I'll be using kicker subs, it was either them or MTX, and kicker's use far less mounting depth, probaly going to be 2 12"'s, I'm thinking about going full fiberglass and having to match the contours of the seats. Would look pretty sweet like that, i'll start a build thread in a bit

You may want to look into a set of SAS Bazooka Bass tubes. I had a set of 8" tubes installed in an '88 Dodge D-50 mini truck and had plenty of room. They lay on the floor of the vehicle, which, in trucks, is the area where you have the most room behind the seat. They have models that are just the tubes themselves and they have amplified models where the amp is part of the tube enclosure, pretty convenient if you've got limited amp mounting room. Right now, I have a JVC MP3 in-dash player and a single amplified 6" Bazooka Tube in my '02 Club Cab, and while it won't win any SPL sound off contests for bass, it does and good low end punch. And if you need the space back, all you have to do is unhook the quick disconnect plug.
Hope this helps out, it should save you from that "pain in the back" dilemma.

DO NOT FACE THE SUBS TOWARDS THE REAR. I went through all the trouble of building a custom box with rear-firing subs and all it did was rattle the sh*t out of the back panel. it sounded horrible on the inside (almost like the speakers were blown) and on the outside it just rattled. I build a new box with the speakers facing the seats, thats the only way to go. I know what you're saying about them hitting your back, I built it so the speakers were flush with the box and I just left about 1/2" between them and the seats. it still bothers your back, but not as bad

can't lose on 22s

bass is omni-directional so facing them in any direction would not matter, excludding the rattle of the back panel. Fiber glass is really more for the custom look and painting, if your just going to carpet it up you may just want to go with mdf board. A lot easier to build with too.

another question is what kind of seating is in your truck...bench or buckets? if bench i would fire them foward, but if you have or can get buckets then reverse them...just my .02
